Swimmer Kim Watcke ’08, Cheshire, CT, trains
hard for success. Watcke broke a seven-year old St. Lawrence record
in the back stroke at the 2005 New York State Women’s Collegiate
Athletic Association Championships as a first-year collegiate swimmer. She
was a three-time Liberty League Rookie of the Week award winner and
had nine event wins last season, and finished second in the 100 back
and third in the 200 back in the Liberty League championships and
third in both events at the NYSWCAA championship.
She puts in eight training sessions per week, averaging between
30-40,000 yards per week in the pool. She has been strong in the
backstroke throughout her sophomore season and was a member of the
champion 200 freestyle relay team in addition to swimming on the
200 and 400 medley relay teams at the conference championships.
She is also a worker for Calling All Saints and is a mentor
at the Banford Elementary School in Canton in addition to being one
of the top scholar-athletes on the swim team and was a finalist for
the Ronald C. Hoffmann First-Year Scholar Athlete Award in 2005. And
she has emerged as a team leader, advising her teammates on both swimming
and academics.
