While Candice Valléjos '08 is the shortest
member of the Saint
tennis team at an even five feet tall, she played a big
role in the first undefeated regular season for the Saint women’s
team since the 1992 season and a second-place finish in the Liberty
League tournament.
Candice, a
member of the Liberty League All Academic team as a sophomore and
an Augsbury Scholar at St. Lawrence, went 4-1 in singles and teamed
with senior Meg Terrien to go 6-2 in doubles as the Saint team went
8-0 in the regular season.
The Valléjos-Terrien
duo made the semifinals of the New York State Women’s Collegiate
Athletic Association doubles championships and turned in strong performances
in the Liberty League tournament as the Saints finished second to
top-seed Vassar in the tournament. They finished the year 9-5 as
a team including post-season play.
Candice was
5-2 overall in singles, advancing to the quarterfinals at fourth
singles in the NYSWCAA tournament. She is 11-6 in singles competition and 19-9
in doubles in her first two seasons on the Saint team. With six seniors graduating
from the women’s team which has gone 23-7 over the last two seasons, Candice
will be a key player for the Saints in her final two seasons of collegiate play.
A psychology major
at St. Lawrence, Candice was a multi-sport athlete as well as an outstanding
student at Beekmantown High School. She ran cross country and indoor
track and played soccer and volleyball in addition to tennis and was
captain of both the tennis and indoor track teams.
