Chris Phelps '91, who quarterbacked the Saint football
team from 1987-1990, still holds the career total offense record
with 4,944 yards going into the 2005 season. As the Saint head football coach,
he is hoping that current senior quarterback Tom Anderson will
pass that mark and keep the Saint rebuilding program heading in the
right direction.
A cum laude
graduate with a bachelor of arts in history and education, Phelps
was a two-year captain of the Saints and both an outstanding passer and a good
runner as a quarterback. Following graduation, he embarked on a coaching career
which began at the University at Albany and included stops at the University
of New Hampshire, and Hobart before he began as the 21st head coach in Saint
history in the fall of 2001.
Phelps is
dedicated to returning the Saint program to a high level of competitiveness.
And, he has a lot more to work with from a facilities standpoint than were present
when he wore a Saint uniform. A new fitness center, new playing field
with grandstand and press facilities and a new indoor field house have
all helped attract some talented young athletes who will help rebuild the Saint
football fortunes.
Phelps
is pleased with the progress of his program and with the caliber of
player who is interested in playing at St. Lawrence. An outstanding
student himself as an undergraduate, he is also pleased that his program
produced the first Academic All America in Saint football history in
guard Pat Reagan and has had a strong representation on the Liberty
League all academic squad.
