Golf Coach Mary Lawrence got the swing of college
coaching quickly. A Canton native and an All America golfer at Miami
(FL) University, Mary returned to her hometown in 1999 to become
St. Lawrence men’s and women’s golf coach, the
director of golf at the St. Lawrence University golf club and
the director of the St. Lawrence University Indoor Golf Center.
Her playing credentials are impeccable. She has been New York State
Junior Champion, New York State Women’s Champion, a USGA Women’s
Amateur medalist and Florida intercollegiate champion. She was part
of two national championship teams at Miami and a first team All
America in 1977. She competed on the LPGA tour from 1978-83 and was
the winner of five professional events. She played in nine USGA Women’s
US Opens, the Women’s British Open and was the medalist and
top qualifier for the LPGA Women’s Senior Tour.
As one of the few women coaching both men’s and women’s
golf teams, her coaching credentials are impressive as well. A league
and regional coach of the year, she guided her men’s team,
which was resurrected as a varsity program in 1999, to back-to-back
NCAA tournament appearances and coached the women’s team, which
was established in 1999, to its first NCAA appearance in 2003. Her
women’s teams have won back to back state collegiate titles and
the men have consistently been among the top teams in the region.
