If Jeremy Freeman ’96 was once a contributor as a member of the Saint tennis teams, he is now a star as their coach. Since returning to his alma mater as head
men’s and
women’s tennis coach in 1999,
he has earned league coach of the year honors three times and the Bernie McKinnon Coach of the Year award as selected by St. Lawrence’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee in 2004. He has also coached the second All America doubles team in Saint women’s tennis history and
has both the men’s and women’s programs established among the top Division III teams in the region.
Freeman and his tennis players are going through a transition in the 2006-07 season as the women’s program, which traditionally played the majority of its matches in the fall, switches the bulk of its schedule to the spring to match the NCAA championship dates. While that means a little lighter load in the fall, it is going to be a hectic winter and early spring for the Saint coach, who is also director of operations for Appleton Arena, the Saints’ ice hockey facility, and the liaison with Instructional Technology for the athletic department.
While the fall season ended in late October, the spring season will begin with practice in late January in the
Newell Field House, a facility which includes five indoor tennis courts. Freeman helped with the design of the facility, which enables the Saints to practice and compete no matter what the weather and is used in conjunction with outdoor courts for several tournaments. Actual competition will begin in February with a men’s and women’s match at the College of New Jersey, and the expanded spring season will include several dual matches for both men and women in addition to matches on the annual Spring Break trip.
