Saint baseball coach Tom Fay teaches student-athletes to coach.
In addition to his duties as baseball coach, Dr. Tom Fay oversees
the academic component in the sport studies and exercise
science minor, which leads to New York State coaching
certification for those who complete the program. He is
also involved in the development of the assessment program for the
New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation
and Dance, which shapes the way physical education is taught
in the state.
While he is committed to and deeply immersed in the academic side
of sports and physical education, his passion is the sport of baseball
and he has coached and taught some outstanding players. Named
the New York State Regional Coach of the Year after leading
his 2006 team to a 24-14 record, the Liberty League Championship
and an NCAA tournament appearance which included the first NCAA victory
in program history, Fay has won 446 games in a 34 season career at
St. Lawrence.
Fay’s impact on St. Lawrence baseball and his players is
reflected in the naming of the new Saint baseball field as Tom
Fay Field.
Several of his former players have gone on to play in professional
organizations and others have gone on to coaching careers, prominent
among them Steve Owens, the coach of LeMoyne College, an annual challenger
for a NCAA Division I tournament berth.
