Most
college coaches head into a season hoping for a berth in the NCAA
tournament at the end of the year. Thanks to game planning, Bob
Durocher seemingly can count on an NCAA spot on a yearly
basis. Durocher enters his 16th season as head coach of the St. Lawrence
men’s soccer
team in the fall of 2005; he will aim at an eighth straight
NCAA tournament berth in November. Since 1998 his teams have
compiled a 121-11-8 record and have not lost more than three games
in a single season. They have hosted at least one round of the NCAA
tournament in each of the last eight years including the 2002 NCAA
semifinals and championship.
he Saint coach spends long hours going over
game tapes and scouting reports to give his teams every possible
advantage when the game gets under way. His teams are also in outstanding
condition physically and play a game which frequently leads
to statistical domination in terms of shots and ball control.
His coaching resume includes a career record of 186-59-23,
14 national All America players and countless league and regional
coach of the year honors. He also has the big prizes: a 22-0-0
regular season, the NCAA Division III championship and national Coach
of the Year recognition in 1999. And the game plan for 2005
should include his 200th career win prior to the end of the season.
