Zane Buckingham ’06, Carthage, NY, is the ultimate multi-event
athlete.
Buckingham is a senior track and field star who
competes in a variety of events throughout the season. And when the
seasons near championship competition time, he competes in a variety
of events in a single day. He finished second in the New York State
Collegiate Track Conference indoor pentathlon as a junior and won
the 2005 ECAC pentathlon championship, setting a record with 3,523
points in the competition. The pentathlon includes the 55 meter hurdles,
long jump, shot put, high jump and 1000 meter run with points awarded
based on time or distance in the event.
Zane also competes in the decathlon outdoors and was the
2005 ECAC champion in that two-day event with 6613 points.
The decathlon includes the 100 meter dash, long jump, shot put,
high jump and 400 meter run on day one and the 110 hurdles, discus,
pole vault, javelin and 1500 meter run on day two. He qualified
for the NCAA championships with his ECAC win, but had to compete
the very next weekend. He finished 12th despite the very short
rest between the two competitions.
The Saint senior physics major will lead the team into February’s
Liberty League and New York State Collegiate Track Conference championships.
And, if he can duplicate his performance in the 2005 Liberty League
outdoor championship, the Saints will finish well up in the standings.
Buckingham accounted for 53 points in the outdoor league championship,
winning the 100 hurdles, 400 hurdles, long jump, triple jump, and
high jump and running on the 4x100 relay and 4x400 relay. He set
a meet and facility record in the 400 hurdles and a meet record in
the high jump in one of the best single-day performances in league
history.
And since Zane’s a North Country native, graduating from Beaver
River Central School, he’s got a local fan club to cheer him
on!
