Matt
Blue ’07, Bellingham, MA plays big minutes for the
basketball team. Blue, a 5-8 guard, has logged a lot of time in his
first two seasons on the Saint basketball
team, and will be a leader as a junior of a young team which hopes to contend
for a Liberty League playoff spot and league championship by season’s end.
At
Bellingham High School, Blue was the league MVP, All-League and two
year captain of his state championship basketball team and was All-League
on his baseball team. He also won the school leadership award and
was on the high honor roll.
He stepped right in at St. Lawrence and
averaged 26 minutes per game, scoring 11 points per game as a first
year player. The Saints went 16-8 in his first season and Blue was
the leading three-point scorer on the team as well as dishing out
40 assists and coming up with 18 steals. Injuries hurt the Saints
in his sophomore season, and he was among those who played hurt through
much of the season. He still averaged 30 minutes per game, had 68
assists, 20 steals and scored 8.6 points per game.
“Matt Blue
has been a great addition to our basketball program, both in terms
of his playing ability and his personality,” said Saint coach Chris
Downs. “He is an athlete who will do what it takes to
succeed, and he is a tremendous person as well.”
Matt has
given the Saint basketball outstanding backcourt leadership and
is a leader off the court as well. An English major with
a minor in sports
studies and exercise science, he is also a mentor for Presidential
Diversity Scholarship students.
