The St. Lawrence University Athletic Department hosted the first annual Saints Athletic Golf Tournament on June 4, 2010.  The event, which was held at the St. Lawrence University Golf Course, saw over 100 golfers hit the links during alumni weekend to help raise funds for the department's initiatives.

"It was truly a special day seeing former student-athletes who are now successful alumni wanting to be part of this inaugural event," said Margie Strait, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation.  "We had a tremendous outpouring of support from businesses both near and far to help with sponsorship, and I want to thank everyone who made it such a fantastic tournament."

Twenty-eight teams comprised of the field in the Saints Athletics Golf Tournament, which was a four-player captain and crew event.  University President Bill Fox was on hand to greet the golfers at the clubhouse and give encouraging words to those who may have needed it!

Following the event, a reception and awards ceremony was held in the club house recognizing teams from several categories.  A silent auction was held during the event, with items ranging from hotel rooms to a TaylorMade driver.  Raffles, a putting contest and delicious hors d'oeuvres provided by the Best Western University Inn were also part of the festivities.

Home Town Golf Inc. was a major sponsor of this year's tournament, as was Victory Promotions, with the two combining to provide each golfer with a Saints Athletics gift package.  A total of 31 different sponsors contributed to the event.  Coaches of many of the athletic programs were on hand to meet-and-greet alumni and participants, while Ethan Townsend of the Nordic Skiing coaching staff and Bob Prier of the men's hockey staff were on hand to provide golfers with refreshments.

"The feedback we received from the participants, both alumni and guests, was extremely positive.  I'm very thankful for the effort by our golf tournament committee and department members," added Strait.  "The proceeds will benefit department initiatives and  our student-athletes as we continue to promote excellence and a quality experience in each of our 32 programs."

The date for the Second Annual Saints Athletics Golf Tournament has already been set for June 3, 2011 with a 10:00am shotgun start.

New additions to the upcoming tournament include lunch for all participants, hole-in-one contests on par-3's, and additional sponsorship opportunities.
