Walter Knych Jr. '52
One of the great golfers in St. Lawrence history, Walter Knych, Jr. was a key player as the golf team qualified for the NCAA championship tournament in both 1951 and 1952 and went undefeated in 1952.
Knych went unbeaten individually and helped the 1952 golf team to the first perfect record in its history as the team went 8-0 and went on to finish 24th in the NCAA championships at Purdue. Included among the team's regular season victories were wins over Cornell, Syracuse and Colgate. The 1952 team continued a string of 14 straight wins started by the 1951 team which also qualified for NCAA play, but did not compete.
A retired dentist and one of the top senior golfers in the Syracuse area, he led the St. Lawrence teams he played on to a record of 27-4 during his four seasons as a varsity golfer. Following graduation he was one of the top golfers in the central New York Area, setting a course record with a 64 while winning the Mohawk Open in 1953. He qualified as an amateur for the U.S. Open.
