Adding Life to Your Years - SPRING 2012

Come join our Senior Fitness Class. It is for those that are just starting out, to those that are experienced but want a group experience. The music makes you want to dance, well sometimes. We use free weights, body weight and yoga. The target is all major muscle groups, improve balance and improve ability to do daily activities. We socialize and walk from 9am-9:15am then have class in the multi-purpose room. You work at your own ability. IT’S FUN come!

Cardio and Muscle Endurance I & II - SPRING 2012

$30.00 for both classes for 5 weeks OR $20.00 for 1 class for 5 weeks

This is a 2-part class. On Mondays, we will be concentrating on intervals of upper body strength training followed by low-impact (but high intensity) cardio intervals. Wednesday’s class will concentrate on intervals of lower body strength training and higher-impact (high intensity) cardio intervals, as well as an intense core interval. Take these classes together, and you have a most complete total body workout. There will be modifications for the cardio intervals of both classes. We will be using dumbbells, power bars, resistance bands, and steps. Take the challenge!

Kendo - SPRING 2012

Kendo, Japanese fencing, is Japan's elite and most respected and popular martial art. It is Japan's top university, college and high school sport practiced by literally hundreds of thousands of men and women. In the U.S., universities such as Harvard, Radcliffe, Cornell, Colgate and Boston College have Kendo clubs.

Martial Arts, Fitness and Self-Defense - SPRING 2012

This class offers practical lessons in traditional karate, personal safety, self-defense, and street awareness. Workouts are non-contact in style. Exercises will challenge the body and mind with core-fitness concepts unique to the martial arts: stretching, meditation, Ki energy techniques, blocks-strikes-escapes, and self-discipline. Belt testings are held. American Kang Duk Won Karate programs have been taught at SLU since 1983. Additional classes are available to St. Lawrence class members Wed. & Sat. Power Forward Training - SPRING 2012

Train for strength in a different way. Do it by working major muscle groups in the lower body, upper body and the core for cardio endurance and for power. This combination of strength and cardio exercises keeps your heart rate elevated the whole time. Train your entire body with very little jumping or high impact. Use important, strong muscles instead. Train with great intensity, and you will know the difference! This is an intermediate – advanced class, and is perfect for keeping maximum intensity in the “off-season”.

In this motivating/fun indoor cycling class you can push the limits of your heart rate zones, burn mad calories and build cardiovascular stamina. Each class is sure to tone your muscles, strengthen your heart, and free your mind! This class incorporates a short segment of upper body resistance work using tubing/bands while Spinning! Great music too!

Come join us for an intense, indoor cycling class put to a mix of contemporary music and blasts from the past. Instruction will focus on the Energy Zones in relation to your heart rate and cadence (pedal rotations). First timers are welcome. The class is designed for all abilities...you work at your own pace. Time will be spent learning the proper bike settings and positions while on the bike. Strengthen your body, burn some calories and enjoy the journey. Be sure to have proper footwear (sneakers or cycling shoes) and bring water and a towel too. Come join us....you won't regret it!

Strength & Toning - SPRING 2012

For all levels of fitness. This total body strength class will work the major muscle groups in both upper and lower body to both strengthen and tone your body. Participants will set their own level by choosing weights appropriate for them. Class will focus on core strength moves, abdominals and glutes.

Strictly Women's Self-Defense & Fitness - SPRING 2012*****

This class will present SLU students and staff members an overview of the basic principles of personal safety and self-defense. These vital lessons can make the difference in risky and challenging situations. You will learn defensive techniques effective against grabs, strikes, and verbal threats. Question to all SLU Female Staff and Students: What is the most important element in any self-defense situation?! (Attend the Trial Class for the answer to this vital safety question.) Course topics will include: *Awareness, Balance, and Confidence *Avoiding Risks in One's Surroundings and Personal Choices *Recognizing and Reacting to Aggression *Strikes, Kicks, Escapes, and Pressure Points for Self-defense *"KI" The Use of Inner Energy in Daily Life for Health and Safety *Fitness, Stretching, Relaxation as a Means to Personal Safety *Concepts of Moral and Legal Justification in Self-defense Loose fitting clothing is advised. Vinyasa Yoga with Sarah is a fun and flowing yoga class in which you will use your breath to move you through dynamic postures, balanced poses, inversions and relaxation. Based on, but not limited to, the Ashtanga yoga sequence of postures, Vinyasa yoga will help you increase your focus, strength, and flexibility as well as burn toxins and purify the body. Appropriate for anybody. Modifications, assists and adjustments will be offered.

The moves combine fast and slow rhythms and resistance training that tone and sculpt your body while burning fat. ZUMBA combines high energy music into an easy, fun, feel-good workout for all abilities and ages. Dance experience is NOT required. Having fun IS. Bring water, a towel and supportive aerobic style sneakers ( shoes without a lot of tread at the bottom and are meant for medial/lateral/twisting motion).

Ditch the workout, join the party! ZUMBA® Toning takes regular Zumba to an all new level with the optional introduction of light weights (1-3 pounds). All of the dancing and fun of Zumba is still there, but the weights take it up a notch for a calorie torching and toning workout! This class brings in new beats and moves, so even if you attend regular Zumba, Zumba Toning will keep you on your toes! Bring supportive sneakers and 1-3 pound weights. (There are limited quantities at the gym, so if you have your own bring them.)

Bring your friends and your are sure to have a blast! Absolutely no dance experienced required. Wear supportive sneakers (running, dance, etc.) and bring plenty of water!
