Trio of Seniors to Captain Saints in 2009-10

May 28: A trio of seniors will lead the St. Lawrence University women's tennis team in 2009-10, as head coach Jeremy Freeman announced that Casey Gilman, Elizabeth Ronty and Chelsea Hubbell will serve as captains next season.

Four Saints Earn All-Conference Accolades

May 18: St. Lawrence University sophomore Stephanie Finn earned Liberty League Women's Tennis First Team honors in both singles and doubles, while three teammates including senior Elizabeth Karam, junior Casey Gilman and first-year student Hillary Drewry also earned All-Conference accolades.

Finn, who was a First Team selection for singles and the conference's Rookie of the Year last season, finished the regular season with an 11-4 overall singles record and was 9-3 at the No. 1 spot for the Saints. The Goldens Bridge, NY native was joined on the First Team by Drewry, who made an immediate impact for the Saints in her first season. The Pennington, NJ native was 12-7 in singles during her rookie year, playing at No. 1 and 2 all season.

Both Finn and Drewry also earned All-Conference doubles honors. Finn and her partner, Gilman, were one of three teams to earn a spot on the First Team. The duo, which was an Honorable Mention choice in 2008, was 9-3 on the season and 9-2 at the No. 1 slot in dual-matches.

Drewry was joined by Karam, a senior captain, as an Honorable Mention doubles team selection. The pairing added a consistent threat in the No. 2 slot for St. Lawrence, where they went 10-1 in dual matches. Drewry and Karam finished with a 12-3 overall doubles record.

Finally, Gilman was given Honorable Mention status for her singles' record in 2008-09. The junior captain added a reliable player to the middle of the Saints' line-up, finishing 16-8 overall in singles play and was 12-4 in dual-matches this season.

Saints Sweep Doubles, Finish Third at Liberty League Tourney

Apr. 26: The St. Lawrence University women's tennis team defeated William Smith on Sunday morning in the 2009 Liberty League Tournament's third place match by the score of 6-3 at Vassar College. The Saints finish the season with an 11-5 record and will wait until next weekend to learn if the program receives its third consecutive bid into the NCAA Tournament.

St. Lawrence, which defeated William Smith back on April 11 in Canton, NY by the score of 5-4, used a perfect 3-0 sweep in the doubles matches en route to the third place victory. Vassar College defeated Skidmore 8-1 to win the 2009 Liberty League Tournament. William Smith finishes their season with an 11-6 record.

The Saints, who needed a win to keep their hopes of an NCAA Tournament berth alive, got out to a great start against the Herons. Senior captain Elizabeth Karam and first-year student Hillary Drewry set the tone by hammering Amanda and Melissa Slack at No. 2 doubles 8-0 to improve to 10-1 on the season at that slot.

Sophomore Stephanie Finn and junior captain Casey Gilman then handed William Smith's Chelsea Rauck and Joanie Hilton an 8-6 loss at the No. 1 slot. Junior Chelsea Hubbell and rookie partner Barry Edgar then matched than 8-6 win against Casey Kennedy and Jess McCue at the No. 3 doubles to put St. Lawrence in commanding position up 3-0.

Saints in Third Place Match at Conference Tournament

Apr. 25: The St. Lawrence University women's tennis team split their first day matches on Saturday at the 2009 Liberty League Tournament hosted by Vassar College. The Saints blitzed Rensselaer in the first round, 9-0, but narrowly lost their semifinal match against Skidmore College 5-4. The Scarlet and Brown will face William Smith tomorrow, Sunday, April 26 in the third place match.

The No. 3 seeded Saints (10-5) remained perfect against No. 6 Rensselaer this season, as they matched their 9-0 win on April 13. Junior Casey Gilman and sophomore Stephanie Finn won at No. 1 doubles, while senior Elizabeth Karam and first-year student Hillary Drewry beat Christine Roe and Caroline Albrect at No. 2. Junior Chelsea Hubbell and rookie Barry Edgar made it a clean 3-0 sweep with an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles.

The Saints continued their dominance against the Red Hawks in singles play, as they won all six matches in straight sets. Finn won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1 against Progga Das, while Drewry lost only one game (6-1, 6-0) to Roe at No. 2. Gilman, Karam, Hubbell and Edgar followed with wins at No.'s 3-6 to set up the showdown with the No. 2 seed Skidmore College in the semifinals.

Gilman Helps Clinch 5-4 Victory Over Ithaca

Apr. 17: St. Lawrence University junior captain Casey Gilman continued her impressive season on Friday, as the Gloucester, MA native won twice including the deciding singles match to give the Saints' women's tennis team a hard-fought 5-4 win against Ithaca College.

The Saints, ranked 24th in the region, move to 9-4 on the season after picking up their third consecutive victory, while the loss moves the 22nd ranked Bombers to 13-6.

St. Lawrence was able to pull out two of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead against Ithaca. The visitors clinched the No. 1 doubles match, 8-4, as sophomore Stephanie Finn and Gilman improved to 7-1 on the year in dual-matches by beating Natalie Jenereski and Agata Kubik.

Alyssa Jaffe and Lindsey Johnston would get that point back for the home team with a narrow 9-7 victory against junior Chelsea Hubbell and rookie Barry Edgar at No. 3. However, senior captain Elizabeth Karam and first-year partner Hillary Drewry would deliver a clutch win at the No. 2 slot for the Saints as they held off Melanie Cohen and Melissa Nunez 9-8 (7-1).

St. Lawrence continued to chip away with singles wins at No. 1 and 5 by Finn and Hubbell, respectively. Finn defeated Devra Reiman 6-3, 6-2 while Hubbell downed Jenereski, 7-5, 6-3.

Saints Pick Up 9-0 Win Over RPI

Apr. 13: The St. Lawrence University women's tennis team picked up an impressive 9-0 win over Rensselaer on Monday afternoon in Troy, NY. The Saints earned their second straight victory and improved to 8-4 on the season.

The Scarlet and Brown took a 3-0 lead on the Red Hawks in the doubles portion of the match, as the team swept the doubles for the fourth time in five matches. Junior captain Casey Gilman and sophomore Stephanie Finn beat RPI's Progga Das and Cora Wigen 8-2 at the No. 1 spot. Senior captain Elizabeth Karam and rookie Hillary Drewry handled Christine Roe and Caroline Albrecht 8-1, while junior Chelsea Hubbell and first-year student Barry Edgar dropped Krisha Subramanian and Kimberly Viles by the same score.

St. Lawrence continued their strong play into the six singles matches, as the Saints didn't drop a set to their hosts. Finn defeated Das at No. 1 6-3, 6-2 while Drewry and sophomore Paige Cohen each won their matches at No.'s 2 and 6 in perfect form, 6-0, 6-0. Gilman, Karam and Hubbell added singles wins at No. 3, 4 and 5 respectively.

The Saints will square off with Ithaca College on Friday, April 17 in Ithaca, NY in the final dual-match of the season. The 2009 Liberty League Tournament will then be held the following weekend at William Smith College.

Saints Upend William Smith on Senior Day, 5-4

Apr. 11: Sophomore Stephanie Finn and first-year student Hillary Drewry both won their singles and doubles matches to help pace the St. Lawrence University women's tennis team to a 5-4 victory over William Smith Saturday afternoon in Liberty League action in Newell Field House.

With the win, the Scarlet and Brown earn their seventh victory of the season and improve to a 7-4 overall mark, while the Herons fall to 6-4 on the season.

St. Lawrence used the doubles portion of the match to earn an undefeated 3-0 lead heading into singles play after Finn teamed with junior co-captain Casey Gilman in the No. 1 doubles spot, defeating Heron Chelsea Rauck and Joanie Hilton, 8-5. Senior co-captain Elizabeth Karam, playing in her final home match of her four-year career, and Drewry only dropped one game to William Smith sisters Amanda and Melissa Slack, 8-1, at No. 2 doubles while junior Chelsea Hubbell and first-year student Barry Edgar shutout Casey Kennedy and Jess McCue from the Herons, 8-0, to earn the doubles sweep for the home team.

In singles play, Finn and Drewry, playing at the No. 1 and No. 2 slots, respectively, earned the two wins necessary for St. Lawrence to prevail. Finn defeated Rauck 6-3, 6-2, while Drewry played Amanda Slack to a score of 6-4, 6-3.

Yellowjackets Knock Off Saints, 6-3

Apr. 5: The St. Lawrence University women's tennis team was unable to overcome a 2-1 deficit after the doubles portion of Sunday's match against the University of Rochester, as the Yellowjackets won four of the six singles matches to earn a 6-3 win over the Saints in a non-conference showdown.

Junior captain Casey Gilman chipped in two points for the Saints, who fell to 6-4 on the season.

Rochester built a 2-1 cushion after doubles play with wins at No.'s 2 and 3. Elana Polivy and Mel Beckmann doubled up St. Lawrence senior captain Elizabeth Karam and rookie Hillary Drewry at No. 2, 8-4. Danielle Shreck and Jamie Bow gave UR a 2-0 lead after handing junior Chelsea Hubbell and first-year student Barry Edgar an 8-5 defeat.

The Saints were able to cut their deficit in half thanks to a dramatic victory by Gilman and sophomore partner Stephanie Finn at the No. 1 slot. The duo warded off Alexandra Goodman and Lia Weiner in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (7).

Though Gilman and Drewry picked up singles wins for the Scarlet and Brown, Rochester won each of the other four matches to claim the 6-3 victory. Gilman beat Bow at No. 4, 7-5, 7-5, while Drewry handled Goodman in straight sets at No. 2, 6-3, 7-6 (4). Weiner, Shreck, Polivy and Beckmann won singles matches for the Yellowjackets.

The Saints will look to avoid a two-match losing streak next Saturday, April 11 when they welcome William Smith to Canton, NY for a Liberty League dual match.

Saints Handle Golden Flyers, 9-0

Apr. 4: The St. Lawrence University women's tennis team picked up their second straight win on Saturday afternoon, as the Scarlet and Brown swept Nazareth College 9-0 in Rochester, NY.

The Saints improve to 6-3 with the victory, which was their third 9-0 shutout of the 2008-09 season. Nazareth falls to 8-10 after suffering the loss.

St. Lawrence rolled to a 3-0 advantage in the doubles portion of the match. Junior captain Casey Gilman and sophomore Stephanie Finn cruised to an 8-1 win at the No. 1 spot over Danielle Carinci and Jess Faber, while senior captain Elizabeth Karam and rookie Hillary Drewry doubled up Elizabeth Way and Kelly Noble, 8-4.

Junior Chelsea Hubbell and first-year student Barry Edgar completed the doubles sweep with an 8-5 victory against Sherrita Wilkins and Jen Crane at No. 3.

The visitors carried their momentum over into singles play, as they won all six matches with only one going to a tiebreaker. Finn, Gilman and Edgar all won their matches 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1, 3 and 6 respectively. Meanwhile, Karam defeated Way 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 and Hubbell handled Noble 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4.

In the No. 5 singles match, sophomore Paige Cohen overcame a first-set deficit to rally past Wilkins to give St. Lawrence a 9-0 win. The Pittsburgh, PA native dropped the opening set 6-7 (2-7) but rallied to win the second set 6-3 and the tiebreaker 10-5.

The Saints look to clinch a weekend sweep tomorrow, Sunday, April 5 when they visit the University of Rochester Yellowjackets.

Gilman, Finn Pace Saints Past Hamilton, 6-3

Mar. 31: St. Lawrence University junior captain Casey Gilman and sophomore Stephanie Finn swept their matches on Tuesday afternoon, leading the Saints to a 6-3 win against Hamilton College in the Newell Field House.

St. Lawrence won for the third time in four matches to improve to 5-3 on the season. The squad used a sweep in the doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead that proved to be enough to hold off the Continentals in singles.

"We knew that doubles would be the key to victory in today's match, as they're a very solid singles team," said St. Lawrence head coach Jeremy Freeman. "I think we're gaining momentum heading into next weekend against Nazareth and Rochester."

Gilman and Finn teamed up at the No. 1 doubles position for the Scarlet and Brown and defeated Ashley Pardoe and Laura Brantley, 8-4. The Saints also received clutch performances from the tandems of senior captain Elizabeth Karam and rookie Hillary Drewry as well as junior Chelsea Hubbell and first-year student Barry Edgar. Karam and Drewry knocked off Deb Barany and Amelia Mattern 8-3, while Hubbell and Edgar handled Caroline Greenberg and Maile Thayer by the same score.

With a solid 3-0 lead on their side, St. Lawrence picked up three of the six singles matches to clinch the 6-3 win over Hamilton. Fresh off their doubles win, Finn and Gilman continued to shine in singles as they beat Barany and Greenberg in impressive fashion with 6-1, 6-0 wins. Finn beat Barany at the top spot while Gilman defeated Greenberg at No. 4.
