Snizek, Caligiore Place in State Amateur

July 10: Melissa Snizek, who will be a sophomore on the St. Lawrence University women's golf team, and Aimee Caligiore, an incoming first-year player, both made the cut in the 2009 New York State Women's Amateur Golf Tournament and both finished in the top 20.

Muzzatti Wins Tournament Title

June 9: St. Lawrence University junior Alair Muzzatti won the 2009 Women's Metropolitan Amateur Golf Tournament at the Siwanoy Country Club in Bronxville, NY June 3.

Saints Finish 14th at NCAA Tourney

St. Lawrence University finished 14th in the 2009 NCAA Division III women's golf championships at Port St. Lucie, FL.

The Saints had a 72-hole four-score total of 1334, nine strokes higher than a year ago, but finished one spot higher in the team standings. SLU shot its best NCAA round in the first round of this year's tournament with a 318 and were second after the first round of play.

Alair Muzzatti led the Saints on Saturday, shooting 81 with a 39 on the back nine for a 328 total. She finished the tournament tied for 31st in a 111 golfer field. Kristin Berretta shot 84 with three birdies and finished with a 72-hole total of 335 strokes amd tied for 64th while Lindsay Cone shot 88 and had a 334 total which tie for 54th. Melissa Snizek shot 87 on Saturday to finish at 342, tied for 75th while Cait Cunningham shot an 87 and finished at 350 which tied for 87th. Cunningham had her collegiate best nine hole score on the front nine on Saturday with a three-over 39.

SAINTS 12TH AFTER THREE ROUNDS AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP

May 15: St. Lawrence University's women's golf team is 12th after three rounds of the NCAA Division III Championships at Port St. Lucie, FL and will be looking to climb back into the top ten when the event concludes on Saturday.

The Saints, playing in the late tee group for the second straight day, found the more difficult course hard to handle again on Friday shooting a team total of 340 for the best four of five scores.

Saints Headed for 2nd Straight NCAA Tournament

May 6: St. Lawrence University's women's golf team has come a long way since its initial dual match against Plattsburgh in September of 1999.


Coach Mary Lawrence, now in her ninth season as coach of the Saint men's and women's teams, will take a team to the NCAA tournament for the fifth time in her coaching tenure and the Saint women will be making their second straight appearance and third overall when play gets underway with practice rounds Monday and Tuesday at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, FL. The 72-hole tournament will officially begin on Wednesday and run through Saturday with a 21-team field.


The Saints, ranked 18th in the current National Golf Coaches Association poll and 14th in the Golfstat Head-to-Head rankings, join Middlebury and Amherst as the Northeastern representatives in the field. Middlebury is fifth and Amherst sixth in the Golfstat rankings and the two teams are sixth and eighth in the NGCA polls.


"We have been competitive with both Middlebury and Amherst at various tournaments during the year, so we know we have the potential to put something special together," said Lawrence. The Saints were within six strokes of Middlebury at the Jack Leaman Invitational and were just two strokes behind Amherst at the Williams Tournament in their final two outings of the spring season prior to the NCAA tournament.

Saints 5th at Williams

April 26: Melissa Snizek shot back-to-back rounds of 80 for a 160 total and finished in a tie for fourth overall to lead the Saint women's golf team at the Williams Invitational Saturday and Sunday.


The Saints were fifth in the seven-team field in the final tournament of the spring season. Middlebury won the tournament with a 644 total with Mt. Holyoke second at 662, Amherst third at 667, Vassar fourth at 668 and the Saints fifth with a 669 total. The Saints will await word on a second straight NCAA championship spot when bids are announced next week.


Snizek had her best collegiate finish and matched her low collegiate round on the Taconic Course at Williams. Alair Muzzatti was the second Saint scorer with rounds of 82 and 85 and was 14th while Kristin Berretta was one stroke back in 15th after rounds of 80 and 88. Lindsay Cone shot 89-85 for a 174 total and was 24th and Cait Cunningham shot 95-92-187 and was 34th.

 

Berretta, Muzzatti Lead Saints to 3rd

April 19: Kristin Berretta and Alair Muzzatti trimmed four strokes off their opening round scores and Lindsay Cone improved by five strokes as the St. Lawrence University women's golf team jumped from fifth after day one in the Jack Leaman Invitational hosted by Amherst College to finish third in the 11-team field.


Host Amherst won the event which was played at Hickory Ridge and The Orchards in South Hadley, MA. Amherst followed an opening round team score of 327 with a day two total of 330 to finish at 657. Middlebury was second with rounds of 339 and 338 for a 677 total while the Saints shot 347 and 336 to finish with a 683 total, two strokes better than fourth place Vassar.


Both Amherst (sixth) and Middlebury (fourth) are ranked in the top ten nationally and the 15th-ranked Saints finished 14 strokes in front of 12th ranked Williams. SLU will be out to lock up a second straight NCAA tournament berth when they play at Williams in the final spring tournament prior to the nationals next weekend.


Berretta and Muzzatti each shot opening rounds of 86 at Hickory Ridge on Saturday and came back with 82s on Sunday at the Orchards to finish tied for 11th at 168. Their Sunday rounds were tied for eighth best in the 55-golfer field. Cone, who shot 89 on Saturday, came back with a solid 84 on Sunday and tied for 17th overall.

Berretta 8th, Saints 5th at Vassar

April 5: Junior Kristin Berretta shot rounds of 83 and 81 under less than ideal conditions to finish tied for eighth overall and help the Saint women's golf team to a tie for fifth at the Vassar Invitational Saturday and Sunday.


The Saints finished with a two round total of 712 strokes, tied with Mt. Holyoke College for fifth place in a 10-team field. Amherst won the tournament with a 668 total with Middlebury second, Vassar third and SUNY Cortland fourth.


Only two golfers broke 80 in Saturday's opening round and just four shot in the 70s on Sunday on the 5847 yard, par-72 course.


Alair Muzzatti tied for 13th with rounds of 87 and 86 for a 173 total while Lindsay Cone, playing her first rounds of the season after completing an outstanding ski season with All America performances in the national championships shot rounds of 91 and 92 and was 27th. Melissa Snizek shot 95 and 101 for a 196 total and was tied for 35th while Cait Cunningham bounced back from an opening round of 105 with a 97 on Sunday to finish as the Saints' fourth scorer in round two and had a 202 total.

 

Saints Open Spring Season with Win in Arizona

March 21: St. Lawrence University's women's golf team, ranked 16th nationally heading into the spring portion of the season, got that spring schedule off to a good start with a win in the George Fox Invitational Tournament to conclude a week in Arizona.


The Saints had a two-day total of 656 on the par 73, 5804 yard Vista Course at the Westbrook Village Golf Course in Peroia, AZ to edge host George Fox University, which had a 658 total and the University of The Redlands, CA which was third with a 681 total.


Kristin Berretta had the low round of the tournament, opening with a two-over par 75 on Friday and finished with a 154 total to earn medalist honors. Berretta shot 79 on Saturday. Alair Muzzatti was the second low Saint scorer with rounds of 79 and 82 for a 160 total while Melissa Snizek shot 80 and 84 for a 164 total. Cait Cunningham completed the Saint scoring with rounds of 90 and 88 for a 178 total.


Lindsay Cone, who was one of the Saints' top golfers in the fall, missed the Arizona trip while competing for the Saint ski team, becoming the first Saint skier to win an NCAA title when she won the women's giant slalom. She will compete with the golf team in the rest of the spring tournaments.

Cone Finishes Fourth at Middlebury Invitational


Oct. 5: St. Lawrence University's Lindsay Cone hopped off a plane from Chile on Wednesday and went out Saturday and shot one of only three rounds in the 70s on Middlebury's Ralph Myhre Golf Course, eventually finishing fourth and helping the Saints to a fourth place team finish at the Middlebury Invitational.

Cone, who was in Chile training with the US Ski Team, shot rounds of 79 and 81 on the par-71 course and finished with a 160 total, tying for fourth in the field. It was her third top ten finish of the season and her best thus far as a collegiate player.

Alair Muzzatti shot rounds of 83 and 86 for a 169 total and finished 12th, while junior Kristin Berretta bounced back from a 90 in Saturday's round with a solid 83 on Sunday and finished tied for 16th at 173.

Melissa Snizek rounded out the Saint scoring with grounds of 83 and 92 for a 175 total while Beth kessenich was the fifth Saint golfer in the tournament and shot rounds of 112 and 106 to finish tied for 34th.

Middlebury won the tournament with a 648 total with Amherst second at 667, Mount Holyoke third at 673 and the Saints fourth at 677. Williams was fifth at 683 with Vassar sixth at 703 and NYU seventh at 799.


The Saints will complete the fall portion of the schedule at Williams Oct. 11-12.

Snizek Leads Saints To 4th at Mt. Holyoke

Sept. 22: First year Melissa Snizek had a low Sunday round of 77 to finish eighth in a 79-golfer field, helping St. Lawrence University's women's golf team to a solid fourth place finish in the 13-team Mt. Holyoke Invitational.


Snizek carded her third straight top ten finish and was one of only four golfers to break 80 on the challenging 5880-yeard par-72 Orchards course on Sunday. Her 77 was the second best round of the second day and jumped her significantly up the leader board after she opened with an 85, third among Saint golfers in Saturday's round.


The Saints finished with a 665 total, just one stroke behind third place University of Hartford and two behind second place Mt. Holyoke. Amherst won the event with a 657 total for the best four out of five scores on each day of the tournament.


Lindsey Cone shot rounds of 84 and 82 for a 166 total and was tied for 19th while sophomore Alair Muzzatti shot back-to-back 84s and was tied for 23rd with a 168 total. Kristin Berretta completed the Saint top four, finishing 26th as she bounced back from an 87 on Saturday with a solid round of 82 on Sunday. Molly Patterson was the fifth Saint golfer in the tournament and shot rounds of 109 and 104.


The Saints will return to action at Middlebury on Oct. 4-5.
