Saints Fall to Cortland in NCAA First Round, 71-55

Mar. 6: The St. Lawrence University women's basketball team suffered a 71-55 loss to Cortland State on Friday evening in the first round of the 2009 Division III Women's Basketball Tournament, hosted by the University of Scranton in Scranton, Pa.

The Red Dragons improve to 24-4 in their campaign and will face the winner of the Scranton/Keuka game on Saturday, March 7 at 7:00pm in Scranton, Pa. The Saints conclude the season with a 19-8 overall record.
St. Lawrence was led by senior Katie Palmer (Bourne, MA/Falmouth Academy) who recorded a team-high 20 points and nine boards while adding five helpers. Classmate and captain Lauren Sischo (Rodman, NY/South Jefferson) netted 11 points and three assists, while sophomore Abby Stanton (Avon, NY/Avon) chipped in ten points for Saints.

St. Lawrence scored back-to-back three's from Palmer and Sischo, respectively, to open the contest with a 6-0 score in the first minutes, their biggest lead of the frame. Cortland stayed within striking distance of the Scarlet and Brown, never allowing them more than a two-possession lead in the first 20 minutes of action. The Red Dragons knotted things up twice early in the stanza, but St. Lawrence continued to find ways around their opponent to earn the lead once again.

Saints Capture Second Straight Championship Title, Upset Union 71-61

Feb. 28: In the best game of her career, senior forward Katie Palmer scored a career-high 38 points and recorded 12 rebounds to guide the second-seeded St. Lawrence University women's basketball team to a 71-61 victory over top-seeded Union College in the 2009 Liberty League Championship game Saturday afternoon at the Viniar Athletic Center in Schenectady, NY. For the Saints, who earn an automatic bid into the 2009 NCAA Tournament with the victory, it's the team's second consecutive championship title and their third straight trip to NCAA's.

St. Lawrence improves to 19-7 overall with the victory, while Union falls to 19-7 on the season and will await a possible at-large bid into the tournament.

Palmer (Bourne, MA/Falmouth Academy), who wound up with a staggering 50 points, 18 rebounds, seven steals and six assists in the tournament, was rewarded for her tremendous performance by being named the Tournament's Most Valuable Player. Joining her on the All-Tournament Team was teammate and senior captain Lauren Sischo (Rodman, NY/South Jefferson), who recorded 23 points in the two contests and led the Scarlet and Brown with 14 against RPI in their semifinal game. Union's Michelle Rogers and Lauren McCormick, along with RPI's Whitney Coleman, were also named to the squad.

Saints Hold Off RPI To Advance To Conference Championship

Feb. 27: The St. Lawrence University women's basketball team survived a second-half surge on the part Rensselaer Friday evening as the Saints defeated the Red Hawks 54-49 in Schenectady, NY, to advance to the Liberty League Championship contest, set for Saturday afternoon at Union College.

St. Lawrence improves to an 18-7 overall record with the win, while Rensselaer concludes their season with the same mark. The Saints will face Union College in the title game, scheduled for 3:00pm on Saturday, February 28th, with an automatic spot in the NCAA Tournament on the line.

Senior captain Lauren Sischo (Rodman, NY/South Jefferson) led the offense for St. Lawrence, scoring 14 points for the Scarlet and Brown will also picking up five rebounds. Classmate Katie Palmer (Bourne, MA/Falmouth Academy) added 12 points, six boards and five assists, while junior Brittany Parham (Fort Drum, NY/Indian River) chipped in 11 points off 3-for-4 shooting from the floor, with each of her field goals coming from beyond the arc, and perfect shooting from the line. Parham also had a team high three steals in the contest.

Saints Finish Second in Conference; 79-72 OT Win Over Rensselaer

Feb. 21: The St. Lawrence University women's basketball senior class combined for 51 points, 17 rebounds and 10 assists on ‘Senior Day' to help guide the Saints to a 79-72 overtime victory over visiting Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Burkman Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.

The Saints improve to 17-7 and a 10-4 conference mark to close out the regular season, while Rensselaer falls to 18-6 and 10-4 against Liberty League opponents.

With the win, St. Lawrence secures themselves as the second seed in the Liberty League Tournament, where they will face the No. 3 Red Hawks in one of two semifinal matchups next Friday. Union won the Liberty League regular season and will host the tournament, and faces fourth seed Skidmore College in the other semifinal game.

Senior Katie Palmer (Bourne, MA/Falmouth Academy) led the offense and the game with 28 points off 7-of-12 shooting from the field and 86.7 percent shooting from the line (13-for-15) and grabbed 10 boards for her third double-double of the season, while senior captain Lauren Sischo (Rodman, NY/South Jefferson) recorded 13 points. Classmate Jenna Krzemien (Springville, NY/Springville) also reached double-digits, adding 10 points to St. Lawrence's efforts. Rookie Casey Capello (Hanover, MA/Archbishop Williams) also contributed 11 points and five boards.

Palmer's 10 rebounds was enough for her to surpass the 500 career rebound mark, as she now stands at 503 in her four seasons at St. Lawrence.

Saints' Win Over Vassar Sends Squad to Liberty League Tournament

Feb. 20: Ten members of the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team scored points en route to defeating Liberty League opponent Vassar College 70-45 in Burkman Gymnasium Friday night, clinching a spot in the conference tournament, scheduled to begin next weekend.

The Saints improve to a 16-7 overall mark and 9-4 against Liberty League opponents, while Vassar remains winless in conference action falling to 3-21 on the season and 0-13 in the League.

Sophomore Abby Stanton (Avon, NY/Avon) scored a game-high 18 points while senior Katie Palmer also reached double-digits, recording 16 points in the contest. Rookie Casey Capello (Hanover, MA/Archbishop Williams) contributed eight points while classmate Iris Santoni (Florence, MA/Northampton) added seven. Senior captain Lauren Sischo (Rodman, NY/South Jefferson) continued her role as the team's playmaker as she recorded five points while adding a game-high seven assists and four steals.

Saints End Losing Skid With 63-56 Victory Against Hamilton

Feb. 14: After a full 40-minute battle, the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team used a scoring run late in the contest to pull away from Liberty League opponent Hamilton College Saturday afternoon as the Saints defeated the Continentals 63-56 in Scott Field House in Clinton, NY.

The Scarlet and Brown turned around their three-game losing streak to improve to a 15-7 mark and 8-4 in the conference, while Hamilton falls to 13-8 and 6-5 in League action.

Senior Katie Palmer (Bourne, MA/Falmouth Academy) led the Saints' offense for the 12th time this season, recording a game-high 19 points off 50-percent shooting while also collecting seven rebounds. Classmate and team captain Lauren Sischo (Rodman, NY/South Jefferson) also scored in the double digits, tallying 10 points while also adding three assists. Rookie Katherine Edgerton (Shelburne, VT/Champlain Valley Union) grabbed a game-high 11 boards and chipped in eight points, as did senior Jenna Krzemien (Springville, NY/Springville), who was 4-for-8 from the field in the contest.

William Smith Edges Saints in Final Moments, 64-62

Feb. 13: The St. Lawrence University women's basketball team overcame a 12-point deficit towards the end of the first half and earned as much as a five-point lead in the second before William Smith College climbed back and edged the Saints 64-62 in Liberty League action Friday night in Geneva, NY.

The Saints suffer their third straight loss and fall to 14-7 in their campaign and 7-4 against conference opponents, falling to third in the standings. William Smith improves to a 12-9 mark and a 6-4 record in Liberty League action and remains tied for fourth place in the conference with Hamilton.

Senior Katie Palmer (Bourne, MA/Falmouth Academy) scored a game-high 21 points and nine rebounds, including seven offensive boards, while rookie Katherine Edgerton (Shelburne, VT/Champlain Valley Union) was nearly perfect this evening, shooting 4-for-4 from the field, including a three, and 5-for-6 from the line for 14 points in only 16 minutes on the floor. Classmate Casey Capello (Hanover, MA/Archbishop Williams) chipped in 11 points to close out the double-digit scoring for the Saints.

William Smith jumped out to an early lead before the Scarlet and Brown knotted things up early in the first period, the game's first of nine ties in the contest. The Herons shot 43.3 percent from the floor in the frame that saw five ties and six lead changes while St. Lawrence's largest lead came off two free throws from Edgerton to give control to the visiting team for a moment with the scoreboard reading 14-12 with 11:51 to go in the first.

Skidmore Stuns Saints, 69-58

Feb. 7: The Skidmore Thoroughbreds used 13 three-point buckets to overcome an early deficit and defeat the St. Lawrence University women's basketball 69-59 in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon in Burkman Gym.

Skidmore improves to 8-13 overall with the win and 5-5 in the conference while the Saints suffer their second straight loss and fall to 14-6 in the season and a 7-3 record in the Liberty League. The Saints remain in second place in conference standings, while Skidmore is now in fifth place.

Senior Katie Palmer (Bourne, MA/Falmouth Academy) scored a season-high 28 points, just under half of St. Lawrence's 58 total points, to pace the Saints' offense. The senior also grabbed eight boards and had three assists in the contest. Joining her in double-digits was classmate and captain Lauren Sischo (Rodman, NY/South Jefferson), who had 10 points and three rebounds, as well as adding four assists.

The Scarlet and Brown jumped out to a 10-3 lead early in the first after scoring eight unanswered points. Skidmore began using three-point shots as soon as the contest began, and they played a crucial role in earning their second lead of the frame, 20-19, with 7:53 to play. St. Lawrence tied things up at 22-22 with 4:50 left in the first after a layup from Palmer, but four straight three pointers in less than two minutes from the Thoroughbreds stunned the Saints and gave the visiting team a 34-24 advantage with 2:25 remaining. Skidmore tossed in another layup with 20 seconds left on the clock to earn the 36-24 halftime margin.

Dutchwomen Edge Saints in Liberty League Showdown

Feb. 6: Despite a tough defense on the part of the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team, the Union Dutchwomen concentrated their efforts in making shots in the paint as they made a second half comeback to edge the Saints, 51-47, Friday night in Burkman Gymnasium.

Union improves to a 14-5 overall mark and 8-1 in the conference and takes ownership of first place in the Liberty League standings, while the Saints suffer their first loss in seven games and fall to 14-5 on the season and a 7-2 record in the Liberty League. The Scarlet and Brown are now in second place in the conference.

Leading the Saints' offense was senior Katie Palmer (Bourne, MA/Falmouth Academy), who tallied 15 points while also grabbing four rebounds, two steals and adding a helper. Rookie Casey Capello (Hanover, MA/Archbishop Williams) scored 11 points in just 16 minutes, with nine of those points coming from beyond the perimeter. Senior captain Lauren Sischo (Rodman, NY/South Jefferson) recorded eight boards for the evening and a team high four assists.

Saints Earn Sixth Straight Win With 65-56 Victory Over Clarkson

Feb. 3: First-year athlete Katherine Edgerton and senior Katie Palmer combined for 24 points in the second half to pace the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team to a 65-56 win over Liberty League opponent and North Country rival Clarkson University Tuesday night in Alumni Gymnasium in Potsdam, NY.

St. Lawrence improves to a 14-4 overall mark and 7-1 in the Liberty League and earns its 31st consecutive win over the Golden Knights. Clarkson falls to 6-13 on the season and 1-7 in conference action.

Sophomore Abby Stanton (Avon, NY/Avon Central) led the Scarlet and Brown in the first half with 10 points and eight rebounds and completed the game with a double-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing 13 boards. Palmer (Bourne, MA/Falmouth Academy) led the offense in the second half, scoring 15 of her game-high 20 points in the final 20 minutes of play. Edgerton (Shelburne, VT/Champlain Valley Union) also was a big part of the win, accounting for 12 points. Classmate Casey Capello (Hanover, MA/Archbishop Williams) did a good job cleaning up the glass, collecting six rebounds for the Saints.
