Special teams, Petizian lead Saints to opening win of 2008-09 season

St. Lawrence University cashed in on its special teams and an outstanding goaltending performance by junior Alex Petizian to turn back Niagara University 5-1 for the Saints' first win of the 2008-09 season.

The Saints won at one of the toughest arenas in the nation over the last three years for visiting teams as Niagara had a 34-7-6 record in its last 47 games at home and had the added energy of raising a College Hockey America tournament championship and NCAA participation banner prior to the start of the game.

Michigan tips Saints on late goal, 4-3

Senior wing Tim Miller snapped a 3-3 tie with a rebound goal with 2:33 to go in regulation time, lifting the University of Michigan to a 4-3 victory over St. Lawrence University in the NCAA hockey opener for both teams at Michigan Friday night.

The Saints had to kill off nine Michigan power plays in the game, five of them in the third period, and had only four power play chances of their own, two of them lasting a combined 36 seconds and had a goal waved off in a game which was wide open from start to finish.

Saints, Guelph battle to 2-2 tie

St. Lawrence University introduced a host of new faces to its fans and college hockey on Sunday night, but had to settle for a 2-2 tie with Canadian collegiate hockey's University of Guelph in an exhibition game at Appleton Arena.

The Saints used the game as an audition for a host of newcomers and kept nine regulars out of the lineup. Eight freshmen and two transfers made their first appearance in a Saint uniform with a chance to make the traveling squad for the Saints' official NCAA openers at Michigan next weekend.
