Power of Pink Week!

St. Lawrence University's "Power of Pink" week - a week of events coordinated by student-athletes to raise funds in support of breast cancer awareness - raised $5,400, which students gave to the Gouverneur Business Women.

The Gouverneur Business Women assist families in the North Country with expenses related to screening for and treatment of breast cancer. In the three years that the athletes have been conducting the events, about $18,800 has been raised, in total.

Pep Rally

While there were many notable events held the weekend of November 2nd, at St. Lawrence University, none was as exciting as the student-athlete advisory committee as the "All Campus Pep Rally" which kicked off the 2012 Homecoming Weekend events. This year, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee volunteered to help kick off the weekend by assisting with the event which was held in Burkman Gymnasium. Hundreds of people packed the gymnasium as Sports Information co-Director Joe Kenniston built up positive momentum and excitement throughout the evening. Former Men's Ice Hockey Coach Joe Marsh and current Director of Athletics Margie Strait also spoke at the event. The rally included a tug of war competition as well as a "pub" cookie eating contest.

Tim Wierman Presents

On September 26th, St. Lawrence University Student-Athletes attended a speaker presentation featuring Tim Wierman. Mr. Wierman is a Nationally recognized Speaker who holds a Masters Degree in Nutrition Education and is a member of the American Dietetic Association. He has presented to thousands of athletes, coaches, parents and sports medicine professionals at more than 270 colleges, high schools, clubs, and professional conferences, to discuss proper diet and nutrition. 

While the presentation at St. Lawrence University was well attended, Mr. Wierman focused on various topics such as pre game/ post game meals, proper hydration and importance of a proper diet. " It was a unique experience as it was a really good reminder of simple and effective techniques to remind the athletes about nutrition", Elisa VanKirk- Head Women's Softball Coach. The following morning Tim held 3 general workshops specifically for endurance athletes, power athletes and sports involving both.

First-Year Student-Athlete Time Management Seminar

In early September, The Student-Athlete Development Program coordinated with academic support services in holding a time management seminar for first year student-athletes. The seminar had been designed to enhance study skills and provide useful tips while balancing student-athletes' pursuit of academic excellence with their commitment to athletics. While the seminar was well attended, Dr. Evelyn Jennings, along with Matt McCluskey and Janet Torres, presented on various aspects of successful useful study tips.

After a 20 minute presentation the student-athletes interacted amongst each other and the coaches, while walking through a time management exercise. "While the adjustment from high school to college can at times be challenging, we have been fortunate enough to build a strong relationship and collaborate with academic support services in order to provide useful resources for our student-athletes."- Franco Bari- Coordinator of Student-Athlete Development/ Head Women's Soccer coach.

Six Saints Earn Liberty League Weekly Awards

Nov.12:   The Liberty League announced its weekly award winners on Monday, and six student-athletes were honored for their athletic accomplishments.

Saints Collect, Deliver Clothing for Hurricane Victims

Nov. 8: When the bus departs for the St. Lawrence University football team's game with the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy tomorrow, there will be one more vehicle in the travel party than usual: a jam-packed U-Haul truck. This truck will be full of clothing collected for victims of Hurricane Sandy, and delivered to the Red Cross on Long Island on Saturday morning.

Athletic Program Sponsors Hurricane Sandy Relief Effort

Nov. 1: St. Lawrence University's athletic department is pitching in to help provide relief for victims of Hurricane Sandy on Long Island.


A clothing drive and fundraiser will be held throughout the weekend and into next week with the clothing provided and monetary proceeds being delivered to the Red Cross on Long Island when the Saint football team travels to Kings Point Nov. 10 to play its annual Hoffmann Cup game against the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.


Drop boxes for well-kept folded clothing, identified as a priority item by the Red Cross, will be located the Augsbury Gymnasium lobby, the Newell Field House lobby near the fitness center and in the Appleton Arena lobby. Donation stations for monetary contributions will also be set up in Augsbury for Friday's Homecoming pep rally and at Appleton Arena for the hockey games Friday and Saturday night.Donations will also be accepted at Saturday's football game against Hobart.


Financial donations may also be dropped off at the office of quarterbacks coach Tom Blumenauer at any time prior to the team's Nov. 9 departure for Long Island.

 

Update: Athletic Events to Proceed on Schedule

**UPDATE**
Oct. 30: Events this weekend, Nov. 2-4, will go on as scheduled, including Homecoming, the Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremonies and a tribute to Hockey Coach Emeritus Joe Marsh.

We realize that due to the storm, some who had planned to travel to campus to join in these celebrations may not be able to be with us, but after consultation and discussion, it was decided that it would be best to go on with the weekend as planned.

The campus sustained no damage and there was no loss of power here. If you can't be with us, we hope that you're safe and we also hope to see you next year!

Liberty League Honors Six Saints with Weekly Awards

Oct. 23: The Liberty League announced its weekly award winners on Monday, and six student-athletes were honored for their athletic accomplishments.

The St. Lawrence cross country runners swept the weekly Performer and Rookie of the Week honors on both the men's and women's sides. Sam Rakoc and Amy Cymerman were Performers of the Week, while Spencer Patterson and Ella Martin were Rookies of the Week.

Rakoc earned Performer of the Week honors for the fourth time this season after becoming the fourth consecutive Saints runner to win the NYSCTC individual title. The Swampscott, MA native captured the state crown with a time of 25:44.6, a 10-second margin over the second place finisher in the 143-runner field.

Patterson earned the Rookie of the Week award for the second time in three weeks, as he was the top first-year runner at the NYSCTC Championships. The Saratoga Springs, NY native was the second St. Lawrence runner across the line with a sixth place overall finish in 26:10.6.

Cymerman earned her first Performer of the Week honors for the 2012 season after posting a career-best second place finish in the women's state championship race. The Pittsford, NY native ran in 22:39.9, helping the Saints to a fifth consecutive team title with a record-tying low score.

Martin was also key to the Saints' victory this weekend, finishing third overall in a field of 141 runners. The Woods Hole, MA native ran in 22:49.5 to collect her fourth top-10 finish in five collegiate races.

Six Individuals, Track Teams Are 2012 Hall of Fame Induction Class

Oct. 11: Five former athletes, a highly successful coach and two of the outstanding men's indoor and outdoor track teams in program history will make up the class of 2012 when the St. Lawrence University Athletic Hall of Fame holds its annual induction luncheon on Saturday, Nov. 3 at noon.

The new inductees include football/wrestling standout Bill LaRock '70, national champion and All America swimmer Jeff Cook '78, baseball and football star Bob Glendening '84, All America swimmer Jen White Walden '89, and three-sport star Meredith Eisenhut Eberz '02 plus former ski coach Bob Axtell and the 1987 and 1988 men's indoor and outdoor track and field teams which earned three NCAA trophies.

The luncheon and following induction is open to the public. Luncheon tickets are $25 and reservations are requested. Reservations may be made by calling Cheryl Kennedy at 315-229-5418 or through email : ckennedy@stlawu.edu.

The 2012 induction will be the 34th in the history of the St. Lawrence Athletic Hall of Fame which began in 1979 with the induction of former athlete, coach and athletic director Ron Burkman as the sole inductee in the first year. It has since grown to include 214 individuals and 16 teams.
