Talented Faculty
"Working with Assistant Professor Melissa Schulenberg as a Art and Art History major with a concentration in printmaking was my favorite experience in the arts. I was able to learn nearly every print process possible. She stayed after class and came in nights and weekends to show me more and more processes. She always goes the extra mile for her students, even if it means making sacrifices in her own life.
"The studio faculty are all really talented and they challenge their students to work hard. It's very rewarding. I know students would love to see more classes offered by the Art and Art History department. The addition of more arts technology and incorporation of the photography and printmaking studios will enable more students to learn art well and produce high-quality work.
"My experience in the Art and Art History department--working with well-known studio artists and learning how to work in and run the gallery--is the reason I got a job as art director of the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts two days after graduation. The department is already amazing, but the renovation will make it even better for future students."

The Place Is the Thing
"I concentrated on communication theory, and I had the opportunity to work on many independent projects, including a service learning study on dialogues between Canton residents and St. Lawrence students. There are so many opportunities for independent study. The professors are incredible and really support anything a student wants to do. They also have access to many resources to pursue their projects. Performance and communication arts offers a lot of unique cross-listed courses that attract students to the department."

Drawing Out That Hidden Talent
"The absolute best thing about the performance and communication arts faculty and students is that the level of enthusiasm is contagious. It is truly the heart and soul of the department. The faculty are so multi-faceted that their knowledge extends well beyond the classroom and acts as a wonderful resource for the students.
"The new facilities will instill in both the faculty and the students a greater sense of pride in their surroundings and, ultimately, their work. It will also help attract students to the department who would otherwise have had no interest in the arts. Who knows, we could discover a wonderful hidden talent in someone!"

Creative Spaces
"I'm doing a multi-field major centered in art and music, and my activities tend to be based around music, painting and, of course, high-quality time at the Java Barn coffeehouse! My professors have really helped me out; they've given me a good education while still being open to my own personal interpretations on what we were studying. When I realized that I could create a major that would combine my interests, everything began to fall into place.
"I think it's great that St. Lawrence is investing more in the arts. It will certainly change the atmosphere around St. Lawrence since there will be more space for creative things to happen as well as more room to allow students to add the arts into their education. As for the arts students and faculty, the prospect of having new space is definitely a plus--space to create is much needed, and I think that we'll all be seeing a huge increase in creativity and production as a result of the renovation."

Moving Toward a 21st-Century Technology
"I was a Art and Art History and English double major, but I did most of my work in the arts building. The Art and Art History faculty are very supportive of student requests, from workspace to exhibitions, in addition to being outstanding scholars.
"With more emphasis placed on the technological aspects of art and presentation, the department will finally be able to advance past using slides for art history lectures! Also, with an increase in exhibition space, we'll be able to expand the awareness of the campus community as to what goes on in the Art and Art History at St. Lawrence."

How Can She Keep From Singing?
"As a member of the Laurentian Singers and Singing Sinners, I am excited about the prospect of having new rehearsal and performance spaces. It will be great not to have to worry about reserving spaces or disrupting people in common areas. The best thing about music at St. Lawrence is all the options--I could be in five different ensembles if I wanted to--but the music department is very small. The renovation will attract many more students to music and the other arts."
