Home is where the art is for Joel Waite '07, an English major from Hadley, N.Y., and Hadley-Luzerne High school.
Joel chose St. Lawrence because he "loved the campus, the atmosphere and the people," he says. Today, he particularly likes the theater (performance and communications arts) and music departments. "I spend a lot of time with the Laurentian Singers, the Singing Saints, and in the Artists' Guild" theme house, he says.
While on tour in Puerto Rico his first year with the Laurentian Singers, he says, "We got to sing Spanish music in some really rural communities. The people were so grateful to us for taking the time to learn music in their language." Likewise, Joel's favorite academic experiences are when he gets to combine his interests. For his Irish literature final project, he says, "I had to pick an example of Irish music and analyze and present it in relation to the material we'd studied all semester, which gave me the chance to combine my interest in music with my other classes."
As a senior this year, Joel says, "My goal is to earn as many honors as I can." He hopes to be inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa, the national leadership honorary; Irving Bacheller Society, the English honorary; and Psi Chi, the psychology honorary. While Joel hopes that in his future he can combine his interests in music with his English degree, he says, "I just want to find a job I can really enjoy that will let me apply my natural ambition and creative energies."
