Matt Lickfield ’07, West Seneca, NY, is an artist and an athlete
who is considering a career in graphic design or personal training. “Most
people have commented that personal training has nothing to do with
my major, but a liberal arts education gives me a well rounded
education and affords me opportunities to work in other
areas of interest,” he explains.
As a fine arts major, Matt most enjoys working in the medium
of pencil, but he also finds working with pastels is rewarding because
the material allows the drawing constantly to be reworked and blended.
He cites Professor Obiora Udechuckwu's Uli Abstract drawing
class as very influential to his work “because the course really
developed my sense of abstraction and its applications. The forms
I worked with have made their way into my recent works,” he says.
He also loves a course taught by Professor Mark Denaci titled Art
Today, which “deals with the theory and analysis of contemporary
art and has become extremely valuable as it has changed the way I view
art.”
As an athlete, Matt has played varsity basketball, but “after
my freshmen year I tore my ACL, which quickly ended my basketball
career. In many ways it was one of the best things to ever happen
to me. My friend and I started the St .Lawrence Boxing Club, which
will be up and running in the fall of 2006 and I was also accepted in
the Australia program
for the fall of 2006.
