Chances are good that if you go looking for Tucker Hanson ’11, you’ll find him in the Newell Center for Arts Technology in the recently renovated arts complex at St. Lawrence. “I do tons of stuff there—not only using the amazing technology and equipment in the music lab, but also meeting in the Noble Center Underground for Jug Band practice and attending student performances hosted there every month,” says the music major from Etna, NH.
Tucker plays the mandolin and drums in the Jug Band, as well as the violin in the String Orchestra, two of several student ensembles at SLU. He chose St. Lawrence over the music conservatories he was accepted by because he discovered he would have more freedom to explore at St. Lawrence. “A great variety of classes are offered—from different aspects of music theory, to different musics of the world, to recording and music technology. Plus, you can propose an independent study on a particular aspect of music that you want to delve into more deeply,” he explains.
Tucker, a graduate of Hanover High School in Hanover, NH, is also involved with the student-run radio station KSLUand helps coordinate performances at Java, a campus venue for many different kinds of musical entertainment; each enjoys new facilities in 2010. He says, “This is a good college for creative people because there are lots of ensembles and tons of performances.”
