For Kelly Garcia ’07 of Abilene, TX, 24 hours in a day is
simply not enough. Kelly is a double major in physics and music and
is also a film minor, finds
time to contribute to St. Lawrence in a variety of ways. She works
at the costume shop, in the music library, is a music tutor and helps paint sets
for productions. She helps set up the physics labs, and is one of the mentors
for the Presidential Diversity Scholarship students. She
plays in the Rhythm and Roots ensemble, is a member of the physics honorary,
and lives in the Artist Guild. Although
her time seems tied up enough, Kelly has taken on a unique project this fall:
painting a mural for the Sesquicentennial.
To
some people at St. Lawrence, Kelly is a talented artist, but in her
opinion, she just does it for fun. When Kate Byrne ’06 suggested that students
should showcase their art and talents more frequently around campus, Kelly and
her friend, Vanessa Harvey ’07, decided they would take on the task. “We’re
working on a theme that includes both the past and modern times at St. Lawrence,
exemplifying the motto “faith in truth,” she says. Vanessa
generated the ideas for the mural and Kelly wrote the proposal to paint a mural
on a portable canvas so it could be moved around to various places on campus
for different events.
Kelly and
Vanessa are committed to working on the mural during whatever “free time” they
have. “I’m excited to see how it turns out,” Kelly says.
