Vermont native Selina French thanks the Internet for finding her the job of her dreams. With a BA from Simmons College and an MAT from UVM, French found her niche in the costume shop at St. Lawrence via the computer. “Running the Costume Shop at SLU is the perfect place for me. Students here are so smart and motivated,” French says.
In Vermont, French said she was the co-owner of a “cottage industry that produced quilts and comforters.” After they sold the business, she said that she ran a “custom sewing and design business, with some film and theatre stitching on the side. Now, I want to share the knowledge and skills that I’ve acquired,” French says. “I love my job!”
French’s job keeps her busy. The Costume Shop builds costumes for the performance and communication arts department’s numerous major drama productions, while supporting dance classes, student projects and the Dance Ensemble.
In addition, she says that the University’s costume collection is “available for students, faculty, community members, non-profits, local theater groups, and schools,” she says. “We are responsible for care and maintenance of some great costumes covering every historical period,” French says.
Since coming to St. Lawrence last year, French has been “exploring the area by foot, bicycle, snowshoe and skis.” She likes to volunteer for public radio fundraisers, and did so this year with North Country Public Radio, which is headquartered on campus. She also does sewing and alterations for private clients, including “SLU folks.”
