Dr. Matt Carotenuto attends African Studies Association annual meeting

Assistant professor of history Dr. Matt Carotenuto recently chaired a panel title “New Directions in African Sport History” at the African Studies Association’s Annual meeting in Washington DC November 17-20th. He also presented a paper titled “Grappling with the Past: Wrestling and Cultural Identity in Kenya” which explores the the historic decline of indigenous sporting traditions under British colonial rule. Dr. Carotenuto’s summer 2011 research trip to Kenya provided much of the data for the paper and was supported by the history department’s Vilas research fund.
