The Advocates Program is dedicated to creating safe spaces in St. Lawrence and the
surrounding communities for survivors of all genders, sexual orientations, races,
and religions. Advocacy efforts are centered around the following five programs or
initiatives:
Crisis Intervention: This initiative includes any individual in the St.
Lawrence community who has either personally experienced or who has had a friend experience
an incident of sexual violence. Information shared with the Advocates Program is strictly
confidential. Appointments can be made in advance by calling 229-5122, or just drop by the
office in the Dianna B. Torrey '82 Health & Counseling Center.
Surviving the Unthinkable: A support group for students victimized by sexual
assault and/or rape. This confidential group will follow an open discussion philosophy,
as well as exploring consequences of victim blaming, the effects of trauma, and various
coping mechanisms for surviving sexual assault and/or rape.
For more information, call 229-5122.
Living Through Abuse: A support group for students experiencing violence
in an intimate relationship. This confidential group is open to those in any stage of an
abusive relationship - both those who are in the relationship and those that have left.
The group will explore issues including why people choose to stay, safety plans, the
cycle of violence, and coping mechanisms for living through abuse.
For more information, call 229-5122.
Individual Advocacy: Advocates Program staff and volunteers will provide advocacy
to survivors in the St. Lawrence community in the form of hotline assistance, hospital
escorts, court escorts, judicial proceeding escorts, safety-planning, documenting,
resource sharing, and all other advocacy services the individual requests or that
circumstances may indicate.
For more information, call 229-5122.
Policies and Procedures: The Advocates Program is committed to updating
University policies and procedures to reflect the most effective protocols for handling
incidents of sexual violence affecting the campus community. Staff and volunteers
periodically review current policies associated with the prevention of and the response
to sexual violence, recommend changes, and draft new policies and procedures as necessary.
