The St. Lawrence Blog

Who is St. Lawrence University? We are a group of people with countless adventures and even more stories. The St. Lawrence Blog gives our students, faculty and staff the chance to tell their tales, in their own words and in their own way. Sharing these anecdotes in one place gives our community the chance to show how creative, daring and passionate we are about what we do. Alone, these stories are powerful; together they define St. Lawrence.

One year ago, I received the email that would send me on an adventure of a lifetime. I received that long awaited acceptance email to study abroad for the Fall 2015 semester in France.

After four years on the St. Lawrence student newspaper staff, I now have something important in common with Liam Neeson: a very particular set of skills.Writing, editing, designing and promoting The Hill News has exposed me to nearly every facet of weekly newspaper production.

There are a few things I would never have said about myself before coming to St. Lawrence. A self-proclaimed city girl, I would never have told you I like living in a small town where I can see stars when I walk home from the library at night.

Needless to say, St. Lawrence is a big skiing school (we have an entire day where we rent out a ski mountain for goodness’ sake!). However, just because you don’t ski doesn’t mean there isn't plenty for you to do during the long North Country winter!

St. Lawrence provides students with the opportunity to experience off campus study.  More than 60 percent of St. Lawrence students study off campus during their time at SLU. This past fall, I had the incredible opportunity to study abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark.

It’s hard to say exactly what you’ll find in your four-year adventure here at SLU. There are so many different opportunities that the experience offers.  As an English major and a general lover of books, however, I’ve always looked for good advice in the pages I read.

A common question I am asked from prospective students and families is, “What made you choose St. Lawrence?” A fair question, especially after learning I grew up in central Ohio and make the full-day drive to campus several times a semester.

My college search process involved visiting over 20 colleges, some more than once. However, after I visited St. Lawrence University for the first time, the campus and the people continued to stay with me. I found myself comparing every other campus to SLU.
