Community Service Scholarship
Kenneth "Brian" Brownell Jr. '10
Kenneth "Brian" Brownell Jr. '10, biochemistry major from Fort Edward, NY: Community service has helped shape the person he has become.

During his college search, Brian Brownell was attracted to “the small-town atmosphere and genuine kindness of the St. Lawrence community.” He was additionally “thrilled to be offered” a Community Service Scholarship. “After giving so much to my local community, through my Eagle Scout project and countless other community service activities, I felt that this was my new community giving back to me,” he says.

While at SLU, Brownell has been part of Circle K and been involved with Make a Difference Day projects in the local community that are coordinated through SLU’s Center for Civic Engagement.  He’s also an EMT, both on campus and with Canton Fire and Rescue.

“Some people have asked me, ‘How can you volunteer so much of your time -- don’t you get tired of it after a while?’” he says. “I can honestly say that being an EMT for both the campus organization SLU-EMS and Canton Rescue has not only allowed me to give back to my community, but has also shaped me into the person that I am today. Without this service opportunity I know that my St. Lawrence experience would feel incomplete.”

Brian states that “I have always wanted to go to medical school.”  But he’s considering taking two years to work with Teach for America first.  Clearly, his community service dedication won’t stop when he graduates.
