"Being a Presidential Diversity Scholar was important not only for the financial benefit but also for all of the accompanying support services that helped make the transition from high school to college easier."
Karla General '07, a government and sociology double major and Native American studies minor, is from Akwesasne, N.Y., less than an hour from campus, and a graduate of Cornwall Collegiate School in Ontario. A member of the women's golf team and the Native American Student Organization, she says she chose St. Lawrence "because I felt that it would provide the foundation to attend law school." She adds, "The best thing about St. Lawrence has been the students that I have met from so many different parts of the country and the world." A Gates-Millennium Scholar, she will be a McNair Scholar in summer 2006, conducting research on Native Americans and their experiences with environmental racism.
