In between writing papers and exploring we continue to experiment through cooking, the natural world, and woodworking.

On Wednesday the 15th we started off the night by receiving a - borrowed apple press which was a great surprise to everyone her in Arcadia.  We had experimented with building our own press but it did not work out so well.  After dinner we were all eager to start the process of cider making, yogurt making, and drying out lima beans.  Throughout the night we sliced, crushed, and squeezed out 8 1/2 gallons of cider from 3 bushels of apples.  Folks inside the kitchen boiled and cooled milk for yogurt and placed lima beans on trays for drying.  Here in Arcadia we continue to experiment in the kitchen with: ginger beer, raw bread, pea shoots, kombucha, drying herbs from Mary's garden, jalapeno jam and fruit peal vinegar.

Our next experiment brought us to a giant white pine known as the "grandmother of tree!"  We tried various methods of measuring the height, width, and crown of the tree.  Strong math skills were required for this experiment.  We took many different measurements to be as exact as possible.  We are going to submit our data to the big tree registry of New York because it is possible that we have a world class pine here on Lake Massawepie.

On Saturday we headed over to Michael's who we will be woodworking with for the rest of the semester.  We have all chosen projects to build using various tools that are new to us all. On this particular day we were here to build a timer frame for our sauna.  The process was hard but fun because none of us had built a timber frame before.  We all learned how to operate new tools and practiced our woodworking skills that we learned in our previous woodworking class.

After experimenting in these three different fields everyone here continues to be part of the greater experiment of the Adirondack Semester.
