Peterson's Four-Year Colleges
An excerpt from the guide's section on St.
Lawrence states, "The University's innovative and highly
regarded First-Year Program creates communities where groups
of approximately 30-35 first-year students live and learn together.
In the upperclass years, students can choose from traditional
dormitories, Greek chapter houses, and suites and theme cottages
that focus on student interests such as low-impact living and

College Rankings Exposed
(Published by Peterson's)
The publishers state:
While there is no simple answer to the question, “Where
should I go to college?” College Rankings Exposed is
the ultimate, long-awaited response to the illegitimate hijacking
of the college planning and admissions process. Through insights
from college presidents and deans, author and higher education
consultant Paul Boyer empowers students and parents to ask
the hard questions that will help them to really find the
right college and get the quality education they deserve.
Author Boyer states that students and parents should look
for what he believes are the "Five Criteria of a Quality
Education": a commitment to general education; a commitment
to writing, speaking and critical-thinking skills; a commitment
to active learning; opportunities to extend learning beyond
the classroom; and a diverse, intellectually active and respectful
community. St. Lawrence is included among the colleges Boyer
believes possess the criteria.
St. Lawrence University Associate Dean of the First Year and
Professor of Economics Steven Horwitz is quoted in the book,
discussing the first two criteria, and several pages are devoted
to detailing the University's First-Year Program as an example
of a college with a commitment to general education.
