Academic Biography

Dr. Andrew Jones is Assistant Professor of Environmental Sociology. Prior to coming to St. Lawrence, he was at the University of Vermont. He is interested in organic integrity in social and ecological systems and the way that inequality (class, race, gender, sexuality, nationalism) disrupts that integrity. He tries to apply this perspective to both his teaching and his research. He teaches courses on corporations and the envrionment, environmental problems, environmental sociology, ecologically-sustainable societies, and utopian societies. In each of these courses, the disruptive effects of inequality on ecology and society are examined, and alternative modes of social organiation are considered.  He is currently researching the cultural and structural roots of the ecological crisis, and is interested in environmental and social movements. Specific current projects are: the societal implications of peak oil; an analysis of the material and ideological determinants Congressional voting on climate change; and the limits to economic growth, and social and environmental movement responses to those limits. His article, Caring Labor and Class Consciousness won both the Szymanski and the Braverman Awards. He has published in American Sociological Review, Social Forces, Sociological Forum, and Mobilization.
