"Why we curse" Psychology Spring Colloquium
Professor Timothy Jay spoke to an audience of well over 100 students and faculty on Monday,
April 19th on the topic of “Why we curse.” Professor Jay is an expert on psycholinguistics
from the Massachusetts college of Liberal Arts. He described some of the many applications
of his unusual specialty area to legal questions of censorship, hate speech, and fighting
words. Sprinkled with humorous and thought-provoking examples, Professor Jay’s colloquium
served as an excellent example of how psychology can contribute to our understanding of the
relationship between language and emotion.
