Laurentian Singers' Senior Hometown Sweep Tour: Spring Break
The Laurentian Singers toured to NYC and Boston during spring break this year (March 5 – 13) and also sang in the hometown regions of all its senior members. Stops included Rochester, Syracuse, Hartford and Albany. For the Senior Hometown Sweep Tour, they were joined by students taking the spring semester music class Isn't It Romantic?, which explores the art of song from both a popular and classical perspective. Taking his lead from the course, director Barry Torres chose repertoire from the Romanic era and Tin Pan Alley. The first half of the concerts featured music of 19th century masters – Brahms, Mendelssohn, Schubert and Wagner – and America’s great songster Stephen Foster, including Beautiful Dreamer and O Susannah. The Laurentian Singers’ Radio Hour followed intermission. Using the format of a 1930’s radio variety show, the Singers performed songs from stage and screen in both solo and choral arrangements. Selections include such hits as Fats Waller’s Ain’t Misbehavin’, Johnny Mercer’s Laura, Cole Porter’s Night and Day and the Andrews Sisters’ Boogey Woogey Bugle Boy.
