Music Department Ensembles - Spring 2012

SLU Music Department Ensembles are accepting new members for the spring semester. We offer an eclectic mix of music making opportunities for students, faculty, staff and North Country community members. Here’s a rundown of the various groups.

University Chorus

As Canton's community chorus, University Chorus combines the vocal talents of students, faculty and staff, and community members. They perform a varied repertoire, often with instrumental accompaniment.  Following up on last semester’s popular O Canada, a program of folk, classical and pop music by our neighbors to the north, UC will present The Singing Society, the "original" music for community chorus, works written for 19th Century church choirs and singing societies. Music by Schubert (Duetsche Messe in F accompanied by small wind band), Mendelssohn, Brahms, Elgar, Stainer and others. Rehearsals are Tuesday evenings, 7-9 pm starting January 24 in Griffiths 15. String Orchestra

This semester the SLUSO will prepare "A Night on Broadway" featuring music from various well-known musicals, with classics such as Fiddler on the Roof, West Side Story, Miss Saigon, Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, to more contemporary selections from Chess, Mamma Mia, Rent, Wicked and others. The orchestra is pleased to feature vocalist Alexandra Jacobs, as well as additional vocalists. Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings 7-9 pm in Peterson-Kermani Performance Hall in Griffiths Arts Center starting February 1. Auditions will be held Wednesday, January 25, 7 - 8pm, in P-K Hall. Rhythm and Roots: femme fatale

The ever popular Rhythm and Roots Ensemble follows up its recent incarnation as the Soul/Funk Review with Femme Fatale, music by women performer/songwriters such as Feist, Laura Nyro, Metric, Regina Spektor, Imogen Heap, Fiona Apple and Garbage. Singers, string players, pianists, percussionists, guitarists, bass players and sound people are welcome to audition on either Tuesday, 1/24 or Thursday, 1/26 from 7 to 8:30 pm at the Underground, Noble Center 001. Wind Ensemble

Building on the fine - and FUN - work done by the Wind Ensemble under the direction of Michael Farley, we will again pursue an eclectic mix of the best available in wind band repertoire.  Plan on a march, a medley (and it's a great one of Ellington tunes by master arranger Calvin Custer), and a mixture of favorites as determined by the members of the ensemble.  A possible collaboration with University Chorus is also in the discussion stages.  As in the past, everyone is welcome! Rehearsals are Monday and Wednesday, 4:30-6 pm in the Underground, Nobel Center 001. Auditions are Monday, January 23 or Wednesday, January 25, 4:30-6 pm in the Underground.
