Laurentian Singers
A select choir of undergraduate student singers, the Laurentians continue a rich 65-year legacy of choral excellence, performing regularly throughout the year on campus, in the North Country, and nationally and internationally on tour every year during spring break. Their far-ranging repertoire is drawn from the entire span of Euro-American classical traditions as well as world and popular idioms.
The nation’s capitol will be the destination for Tour 2013 with stops in Syracuse (3 current Laurentians and director Barry Torres hail from the Salt City), Philadelphia and Baltimore along the way, where we’ll meet alumni such as US Senator from Maine Susan Collins ‘75 and SLU Trustee astronomer Derrick Pitts ‘78 (a former Laurentian Singer). A detailed itinerary for the tour will be posted in this page.
Repertoire will be an eclectic mix of European, American and African-based music. The program starts with American “gospel” songs: “Down to the River” in an arrangement by accompanist Barbara Phillips-Farley, and 2 Alice Parker arrangements of Sacred Harp songs “Wondrous Love” and "Hark! I Hear the Harps Eternal.” The major work will be the double choir motet “Singet dem Herrn, BWV 225 by Johann Sebastian Bach. Romantic works by Brahms, Grieg and Elgar (including an arrangement of the “Nimrod” variation from his Enigma Variations) follow. The program is rounded out by songs in an African vein – Stevie Wonder’s “Sir Duke,” selections from Paul Simon’s classic album Graceland, South African composer Paul Van Dijk’s “Horizons” written for the King’s Singers, and the video game classic Baba Yetu (text is the Lord’s Prayer in Swahili).
