Dr. Stephanie Hopwood

Visiting Assistant Professor of French

Stephanie Hopwood earned her Ph.D. in French and Francophone literature from the University of Virginia, where she also taught language, literature, and cultural studies courses and served as Associate Director for the French Department’s study abroad programs in Lyon, France.  She subsequently taught for three years at Lycoming College before joining the Modern Languages and Literatures Department at St. Lawrence University. 

Dr. Hopwood’s research interests are varied, but she is currently focused on literature from Haiti and the Haitian Diaspora.  She has been published in The French Review and The Journal of Haitian Studies, and is currently writing a monograph, tentatively titled The Migrating Moi:  Exile and Diaspora in Dany Laferrière’s ‘Autobiographie Américaine.’  In this book-length study, she explores the changing, multi-faceted representation of exile throughout Laferrière’s ten-volume collection of autobiographical novels, positing that the author employs auto-fiction as a space to create and to recreate a personal and universal life experience that challenges monolithic terms traditionally associated with expatriation.    

When not teaching or writing, Dr. Hopwood enjoys reading fiction, practicing yoga, and running outdoors.  She is very much looking forward to participating in local races and in Ottawa’s spring marathon.
