A St. Lawrence University academic department blog

The ModelOAS is designed to promote democracy among the youth of the Hemisphere by familiarizing students, faculty and academic institutions of the Americas with the work of the OAS and its Member States, as well as with the Organization’s role as the premier political forum in the Hemisphere, by engaging students in an active learning exercise where through role-playing they represent the diplomats and political officials of the 34 Member States of the OAS. Each OAS member state delegation is represented by a group of students from universities all over the Western Hemisphere. Students spend a week in Washington participating in the model and engaging with students from all over Latin America.

Hey Everybody! Here was the schedule we followed in Washington (somewhat pared down, with all the contact info erased). We spent the first day-and-a-half in preparatory visits before the Model OAS officially started. For impressions of those visits, see the blog entries from Ted Nichols and Anthony Martin. Super photos of these visits are available in Liz Tiffany's photo essay. A Proposed Draft Resolution (PDR) is a two page proposal concerning what the OAS could do to improve some aspect of Hemispheric affairs. Typically they contain two parts--a list of antecedent actions and agreements that provide background on the OAS stance and the "resolves" that recommend what to do and how to do it, including how to fund the initiative(s).

Over the course of the week in Washington DC for the Model OAS, I had the opportunity to meet and interact with a diverse group of interesting people. On Monday, our first full day in DC, we were fortunate enough to meet with a variety of professionals and interns alike who work in a plethora of different fields somehow related to international relations and more specifically to the western hemisphere.

The Model OAS competition was without a doubt, one of the most significant events in my life as far as determining how I define myself as a person. The people I met, the experience I gained in diplomacy and negotiation, and just the vibrancy and diversity of the city of Washington provided me with the most rewarding experience I have ever had, and it is my goal to replicate that experience everyday in my future career.

As part of St. Lawrence University’s drive to incorporate new experiential learning courses, eight students traveled to the nation’s capital to participate in the Washington Model Organization of American States (WMOAS). During the week long trip, students worked with teams representing schools from across the hemisphere, including Central America, the Carribean and Mexico. They met with NGO’s and explored the political climate that encompasses D.C.

“Give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world” –Marilyn Monroe I agree completely with Marilyn Monroe because when you get dressed in formal business wear, there is a level of confidence that comes with the clothes. A power suit is called that because it makes you feel powerful and changes your attitude and gives you an extra bounce in your step. And as a female walking all around DC in heels, they had better be good shoes because if not then you are not focused on conquering the world.

With the entire planet facing a recession, people always consider how this will affect them on an individual basis or on a national basis. And while this is an important level of consideration, it is also important to think about what this will do to international organizations that are supported by nation states. The United States is about 4 trillion dollars in debt. The United States is also the largest contributor to the Organization of American States (OAS). They pay almost sixty percent of the budget.
