Dr. Jim Shuman is currently serving for 2012-13 in "phased retirement" at St. Lawrence.  He was Coordinator of the Undergraduate Teacher Education Program and as Coordinator of the Graduate Program in General Studies in Education until his retirement in 2012. His resume covers a 40-year career in education, including high school teaching, working as a museum educator, and teaching in colleges and universities. He came to St. Lawrence in 1989. He received M. S. and Ed. D. degrees from West Virginia University and a B. S. degree from Carleton College in Minnesota.

In his career at St. Lawrence, he has served on the executive boards of the New York Association of Colleges for Teacher Education and the New York State Association for Teacher Educators, including a term as president in the 1990s. He continues to serves as Co-Editor of the Journal for the Practical Application of Constructivist Theory in Education (JPACTe), an electronic publication of the Learner-Centered Resource Collaborative. Jim is also a member of the Steering Committee for the annual North Country Symposium devoted to the economic, environmental, and educational vitality of New York State’s North Country region.

Along with his wife, Lauren Buys Shuman, Dr. Shuman was ordained as an interfaith minister in 2000 through the New Seminary in New York City; together they provide interfaith services to individuals and couples in the North Country region.
