Biology Major Awarded APS Research Fellowship
William Mosenthal '11 has been awarded a summer undergraduate research fellowship from the American Physiological Society (APS) for his project "Neuroprotective Properties of Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles,' to be accomplished under the direction of Dr. Ana Y. Estevez. Using molecular techniques, Mosenthal plans to investigate how cerium nanoparticles decrease brain cell death in a model of stroke. This work is being conducted in collaboration with the laboratory of Dr. Joe Erlichman.
With over ten thousand members, the APS is a professional society devoted to fostering education, research and dissemination of information in the physiological sciences. The goals of APS Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships are to excite and encourage undergraduate students to pursue careers in scientific research. The program funds up to 24 undergraduates per year and provides a $4000 stipend to conduct summer research under an established investigator as well as travel funds to attend an APS conference. Mosenthal is a Biology major with interests in pursuing a career as a physician scientist.
