What do you do if you live in a yurt village surrounded by tall trees and lots of water and one of the year’s worst storms is headed in your direction?

Six Arcadians were sitting on a log pile, anxiously waiting for their families to arrive.  Others were inside, noses pressed against windows watching the joyous reunions.  Hugs were passed around freely and perhaps more than one mother shed some tears.  One father remarked that he had never seen college students so happy to see their parents.

For a week of our Creative Expressions of Nature class, we put down our pens and journals, of which we’ve grown quite fond, in favor of leaves, twigs, and multi-colored mud.  Our focus shifted to the work of Andy Goldsworthy, an environmental artist who uses only natural materials to create temporary pieces celebrating patterns and systems found in nature.

Here in Arcadia we are coming to the middle of our semester.  Days are getting shorter, the lake is becoming colder, and leaves are turning the most shocking yellows and vibrant, crimson reds that we have ever seen.  As we arrive at the end of summer and enter into autumn, so too we wrap up our first course in woodworking.

Two groups, four days, nine high peaks, twenty-three candy bars, countless breathtaking views, and oodles of fun is the best way to sum up this past week.

What comes to mind when you think of the Adirondack Semester?  Yurts, canoes, and long mountain hikes may be what we Arcadians are known for, but very few people realize that clothing is an integral part of Adirondack life.  Here on Lake Massawepie, we like to look good.  As Backwoods Princess and Wild Child, our fashionista identities, we find ourselves uniquely able to share the fabulous functionality of this season’s Arcadian fashions.
