THINGS TO BRING

Tips From Previous SLU First-Year Students

The University provides the basic furnishings for residential living, but many people find that a few small additions help them feel at home.  Here are some of the suggestions we got from the first-year class about what to bring and things to know about coming to campus:

 "You don't always have to be best friends with your roommate.  
It is perfectly ok to be good acquaintances with them as long as you are
respectful of their property and towards them.  Then things will go well."

Most of these items are most certainly NOT necessities, however they are helpful in knowing what some students use daily:

 What to Bring:

 Bed Stuff:

  • Twin Extra Long Sheets (mattresses: 80" long and 36" wide, extra long)
  • Mattress cover
  • Bed cushion
  • Blanket(s)
  • Pillows
  • Dust ruffle (or sheet to cover stuff under your bed)
  • Bedspread, comforter
  • Alarm Clock/ Clock Radio

 Toiletries:

  • Towels/ washcloths
  • Toothbrush/ toothpaste
  • Deodorant
  • Hand soap
  • Lotion
  • Q-tips
  • Nail clipper/ tweezers
  • Shampoo/ conditioner/ body wash

  • Storage crates (under-the-bed size)

  • Small overnight bag
  • Free-time stuff: video games, cards, board games, books
  • Decorations (one or two tapestries or pieces of material per room and any other decorations must be hung so as not to mar walls or paint or create fire hazards).
  • Cleaning supplies (disinfectant, cleaning spray and/or wipes)

Stuff to Consult with your Roommate about:

  • Microwave/ toaster oven
  • Small Refrigerator (limit one per room: 3 cu. ft.)
  • TV (each residence hall has a TV lounge with cable service)
  • VCR/ DVD player
  • Stereo
  • Rug

 
Items Not to Bring:

For safety reasons, the following are not allowed in students rooms: waterbeds, space heaters, sun lamps, hot plates, candles, incense, immersion coils, air conditioners and halogen lamps.
