Happy 150th Birthday St. Lawrence! May the next 150 years be even better, and may you continue to shine brightly in the wilderness and continue to provide a warm and caring environment that allows for life-long friendships and life-long learning. To our successors - know how dearly we love this institution, and how we trust that you will continue to strive to make it even better so that in 150 years you will be adding your best wishes to future generations as well. Happy Birthday SLU!!! And I wish you many more!!

Craig Ruhm'61
I had planned to be present for this great event as Reunion Chairman for my class, but a rather rare medical problem has me grounded for the time being. This will be my 1st missed reunion since graduation. Happy Birthday on this great day. Having been involved with St. Lawrence as a student, alumni, staff member, and a member of the Alumni Council, I have a deep respect and appreciation for all of those qualities that make St.Lawrence a truly unique experience. Thanks, and again, a special Happy Birthday to all who have made the St. Lawrence experience, the "gift that has never stopped giving".

Tim Byrne'74
What a great place to grow up- learn and learn how to learn; make lifelong friends; a place to dream - and figure out how to reach at least some of those dreams. It was and is a safe place to learn how to make decisions, and do so in an atmosphere of support. And it's a place that will always be in my heart.

J. Mark Erickson, faculty
My hope is that by your 200th birthday you will have matured into a just, rational and well rounded institution that is confident enough in itself to be able to accept ideas and opinions of all persuasions with tolerance and collegiality. May great faculty bring great wisdom and may great administrations hear that wisdom and respond. If so you will truly be in tier one by 200! I hope congrats are in order.

Lucy and Fred Funke'56
On behalf of our sons Frederick R. Funke III '87 and William P. Funke'89 and "twigs", Taylor,Creighton and Egan Funke we wish St. Lawrence University our heartiest congratulations as you celebrate 150 years. Furthermore and on behalf of future generations of laurentians, we enthusiastically support the university's recent adoption of the proposal for a sustained commitment to environmental stewardship.

Viki Kish Christensen, friend
May the Spirit of truth, wisdom, joy, and peace continue to abide with this stellar institution. All the best to St. Lawrence with much affection and appreciation.

Kelly Cordes '10

Minerva Arias '03
Oh dear Larryland! Who would have thought that I'd look back and say that you gave me some of the best years of my life (thusfar). As I embark on the next great journey of my life, the Peace Corps in Zambia for the next two years, I must give you thanks for preparing me for all of my life's adventures & mostly to the HEOP family!! And for giving me some of the best friends and best memories I could ask for! LCL 4life!

Kate Schneider '05
Happy Birthday St. Lawrence! Last year seems so far away, but the laughter is still fond, the cold still scary, and the knowledge still valuable. Thank you for so much.

John D. Gursky '07
Dear St. Lawrence, Happy 150th Birthday!! I cannot begin to thank you for all that you have done for me these past three incredible years.

When I look at snapshots of SLU 150 years ago, it is hard to imagine how much we have grown and changed. I know that St. Lawrence will grow even more and provide many, many more generations with experiences they will hold onto for the rest of their lives. Happy Birthday!
Fondly, John Gursky '07 and my late grandfather, Frank Demshaw '51

Dick Southwick '80
There is no place like you. The cold beauty of the North country winters, the warmth of friendship, the horizons you reveal. At 150 you are just getting started-the best is yet to come.

Suzanne Noble, staff
Happy Birthday St. Lawrence!! I've spent nearly half my life here and gotten great joy from the people I've met. Here's to 50 more SLU.

Jeff Cook '70
Happy 150th to a remarkable, vibrant community of wonderful people. Before going, I was told that if you make through the first winter, you will have friends for a lifetime. It was true then and it is still true 40 years later. Amazing caring and giving people: students, faculty, administrators, staff, alumni, parents and friends. It must be the water or the air! There is an energy and an enthusiasm about St. Lawrence that amazes people. "Oh, they're from St. Lawrence" is a common refrain. And it continues from generation to generation. Finally, the University has a tradition of creative and effective presidents and board chairs that have lead us all on this extraordinary journey. We are getting better and we are just warming up!

Cynthia (Cindy) Habeeb Bufalini '82
May the candle in the wilderness never be extinguished! On to the next 150!

Gene Maloney '47
Happy Birthday to SLU.......although I did not graduate I spent 6 semesters at SLU in the V-5 program in 1944-45. After discharge from the Navy, I went to law school, so I never got a degree. I have many great memories of the time I spent there and I consider myself an Honorary member of the class of '47

Ellen Fitts Byrne '74, P'06

Happy Birthday St. Lawrence!!! May you continue serving the community and teaching our "children" for many years to come......

Paula Faust Newcomb, past staff
I've been thinking about St. Lawrence all day. I have wonderful memories of my almost nine years of work in Vilas Hall. Happy Birthday.

Pamela Burton '94
happy 150 birthday SLU!
being part of the st. lawrence family, i love SLU as much as i hate it. campus will always be my third home; i miss it (but i don't miss the cold!). i wrote a little something for SLU's birthday. it's still in rough draft, but i hope someone enjoys it.

"so Alex"

miles to go before you sleep,
somehow you seeped beneath my skin
and became everything i wanted to be
and nothing that i needed.

so alex, i sit writing a birthday note to college,
something that you only once visited in a dream.
they wrote you off as nothing worthy until we
begged for your return.

and so you did with grace and dignity, and
became a symbol of coyote hope and kisses.
i think you, alex, because of you...i remembered
what i loved more than what i hated.

tori taught us the power of woman,
and duckie taught us elegance.
the coyotes taught us the meaning of loyalty
while the originals gave us legands.

whitman poetry and purple horses,
gilmore stars and kanakaredes.
memories and future scenes
are kept in our castle keep.

so alex, thank you for spending years with me,
and i'll try not to cry as you leave.
you've got many miles to go before you sleep
and more promises to keep.

Rainie Blanchet '42

Did you know that today is my birthday too?...class of '42, age 87?? All my athletic training at SLU stands me in good stead. I carry on in that vein. Swam 40 lengths (25 meter pool) this a.m.
So....Happy Birthday in return to SLU!

Bob Brandon '50
I truly appreciate the education I received at SLU.

Kenneth Hepburn Noble '79
Dear SLU, Thank you for our great grounding in Earth Sciences and Envrionmental Studies. For the first time I have been teaching undergraduates in introdutory Earth Sciences. After all of these years the education SLU provided in the North Country is as solid as the Adirondack Anorthosite. Congratulations to the SLU hockey women in their NCAA championsip quest. Keep on keeping.....oh,the men didn't have bad year either. Go SLU lax!!

Jessica Sullivan '08
You're looking great for 150, St. Lawrence! I sometimes wonder how I made it here from Kansas, but there's really no other place I'd rather be--thank you, SLU, for what will certainly be four of the best years of my life!

Bridget M. Everly '02

Thank you to St. Lawrence, its faculty, staff, and students. Without you, I would not be me. Happy Birthday!

Lawrence J. Winston '60 (Chair, Board of Trustees)
HAPPY 150th BIRTHDAY ST.LAWRENCE!!
I was here for the 100th and we were pretty good then. I am here for the 150th and we are much better now than we were 50 years ago. I won't be here for the 200th (except in spirit) but all the Trustees are counting on all of you to do what you can (and must do) to make us even better for the next one. Good luck and the ball is in your court now!

Lynne Barnes Leahy '72
Congratulations St. Lawrence!!!!! You're the best! ....a great opportunity in life, another chance to excel!!!! XXXX

Debbie Bishop, staff
St. Lawrence University is truly a unique and special place, my second home/family for the past 28 years; 19 of them with the First-Year Program. This year, the First-Year Program will celebrate its 20th birthday. My husband Gene also works here as the Information Technology Audio Visual Technology Specialist and has been here close to 20 years. St. Lawrence is unique in its people, community, traditions, and atmosphere. If you love where you are, others will feel it and love it too. Learn from those that have been here before you and you will enjoy the wonderful experience. Happy 150th Birthday SLU!

Danielle Weaver '07
Happy Birthday St. Lawrence, thanks for all the memories so far...with more to come!

Joe and Cindy Riggs '73
We celebrate the accomplishments of the past and look forward to a future in which St. Lawrence is thriving.

Joe Richardson '63-Trustee
As an active alumnus, I continue to be encouraged about how teaching and learning is being strengthened at St. Lawrence and the kind of research collaboration between students and faculty.I trust that this will continue to strengthen in the next 150 years! We have extraordinary students with talents of inquiry and critical thinking. May we continue the commitment to excellence and thus remind us why St. Lawrence is such a remarkable place to learn.

Mary Rennie Norton ‘45
Dear Fellow Laurentians,
I am thinking of all of you scattered in various venues across our country, you who will be celebrating our 150th birthday on Monday! Husband Fred and I regret that we are unable to attend any of them.
It is always with true delight and feeling of deep gratitude that I recall my years at St. Lawrence during the war years. There is also a small feeling of regret – wondering what life on campus would have been like had I attended other than during World War II – and been able to experience a more “normal” life on campus.

However, St. Lawrence truly provided me with a wonderful education – one that equipped me to enjoy a variety of experiences in the workplace, our home, and leisure time. Fred and I were married in 1946 immediately (2 weeks!) after his return from the European Theatre of Operations. I enjoyed being an assistant engineer at GE in Schenectady, an instructor of mathematics at Champlain College, a grade school teacher, an educational director in a large Methodist church, and after receiving my MLS - a Community Activities Coordinator (adult programming) in a public library, and a children’s librarian in a Catholic academy. Some part of what I had been exposed to at St. Lawrence prepared me well for each change in career, including raising three successful children! We have also enjoyed camping and traveling, visiting national parks and many museums – life has been blessed and my years at St. Lawrence played a big part!

We now live in our own villa at Copeland Oaks, a United Methodist related life care retirement community in Northeast Ohio with each of our children and their families within a short drive. Here we are able to enjoy many and varied activities (including FREE golf), but also have the opportunity to volunteer – continuing to “contribute.” Our campus is only 5 miles from Mount Union College. We recently attended Tim Russert’s lecture there with our daughter who is just off a term on MUC Alumni Council. Affairs on campus bring back great memories of St. Lawrence, and the College of William and Mary (we returned to Ohio in 2001 after 25 years in Williamsburg, Virginia!) We are relatively healthy and extremely happy – truly blessed. Thank you St. Lawrence, and my classmates, for your part in this! Here’s to the St. Lawrence 200th birthday!

Casey Peterson '03
Happy Birthday St. Lawrence! I will forever be indebted to St. Lawrence and the people that make it so special. Here's to another 150 years!

Elizabeth (Johnston) Hubbard '03
Happy birthday SLU! If it weren't for SLU I would never have met my husband (Jason Hubbard '02) or fell in love with the North Country. Hopefully in 50 years when our first little one (expected in about 4 weeks) reads this she'll be an alum too!

Janet '75 and Bob Kmetz '75
Janet Olchowski and I met at SLU and were later married. We still have very close SLU friends that we see frequently. Some we have vacationed with for close to 30 years! For future generations at SLU, this is the SLU gift; memories AND active friendships that can last a lifetime! Build and enjoy them!!

W. J. (Jack) Howell, Jr. '62
A genuine milestone. May SLU enjoy another 150 years of continuing growth and excellence. I'm very proud to be an alum.

Kimberly Hubbard '99
Happy Birthday SLU! Thank you for the memories and the friendships.

Brad Rauch '89 and Kristina Bonin '90
Happy Birthday and here's to another 150 years

Bart Salmon '59
After a distinguished 150 years, may your stature continue to grow in the promising years ahead...

Roger Brandt '80
Here is to another 150 years as well as a long line of St. Lawrence families lining up to carry on the great traditions.

Tricia Nash Gomer '74
I can't remember a time when I didn't know St. Lawrence. My parents, Bill '48 and Esther Nash, were born and raised in Canton, so I listened for the chapel bells, gazed down the Avenue Of The Elms, and cheered at hockey games in Appleton Arena long before I moved into Carnegie Hall in the fall of 1970. The former science building had been transformed into dorm rooms for 60+ freshmen. The first "Carnegie Girls" were a tight knit, fun loving group with the biggest closets and windows on campus! Thank you St. Lawrence for a fine education, lifelong friends, fond memories and especially for my husband, Chuck '73! I hope our daughter, Sarah '08, will feel as rewarded by her SLU experiences as I do. Happy 150th Birthday St. Lawrence!

E-Ben D.Grisby '99
Cheers on the Sesquicentennial and many more years as a great university with excelent people!

Steve Amick '86
May you ever thrive under that canopy of bright stars and Northern Lights.
As you grow, stay true to the notion of "the candle in the wilderness," remembering always that the surroundings, the natural setting and the isolation--the "wilderness"--is as important as the candle. In this world of inundation, that's the thing that makes St. Lawrence so uniquely suited for fostering both camaraderie and contemplation.

Betsy Maloney Kolber '78
Happy Birthday SLU! Many of my strongest memories and livelong friendships were made while I was at St. Lawrence. Here's to others making their own memories and establishing important relationships while at SLU...

Ken Polk '91 (Alumni Executive Council)
How exciting it was to spend Charter Day with 25 alumni in Buffalo knowing that hundreds of others were celebrating tonight around the country as well. Happy Birthday SLU!!! I hope I'm around for the 200th. Thank you for being such an important part of my life.

Richard M. Lennon '55
Congratulations on 150 years of outstanding contributions and success. May St. Lawrence continue that tradition ten times over.

Marian F. Moore '56
Best Wishes from one of the Centennial class about to celebrate at my 50th reunion.
Happy Birthday, SLU

Roberta Pallante Fitzgerals '88
Happy 150th Birthday St. Lawrence!!! May you continue to provide a quality education for your students for many years to come.

Jack and Judy Talor, retired staff
The best 30 years of my life were spent working for St. Lawrence! The college was very good to me, and I worked very hard so I could give back and show my gratitude. I love visiting the campus to see friends and the progress in the building program. Even after 12 years I am amazed at how many faculty and staff remember me.
St. Lawrence is a unique college, I have always said it is unfortunately a well kept secret. I don't understand why more students aren't breaking the doors down to attend this wonderful college. Happy Birthday St. Lawrence!!!!!!!! Our Love to you and ALL!

Anne Ferris Cassidy '74 (Alumni Executive Council)

It is the voices of St. Lawrence that I will always treasure - those we hear often and those we hear far too infrequently. I hope that future Laurentians will enjoy this great gift, too. Happy Birthday!

Shelly L. Pike Ahlfeld '96, M.Ed'01
Happy Birthday! It's good to see this little candle in the wilderness thriving after 150 years. Hail, Alma Mater...we'll ne'r forget the scarlet and the brown!

Bruce Carlisle '78
Happy Birthday St. Lawrence!. I practically grew up on the campus and I had a great four years. I'm delighted with all of the steps the school is taking to become ever more competitive. It's a special place.

Lennelle McKinnon '58 (Alumni Executive Council)
Happy Birthday, St. Lawrence! May you continue to provide students long into the future with the love of learning, the lifelong friendships with fellow students, faculty, and staff, and the countless warm memories that were your legacy to me. Thank you for the richness you have brought to my life. I know you will continue to provide students with challenging opportunities to learn about the world and themselves. Keep the chapel bells ringing!

Sally Byrnes Magin' 65 & P ' 06
Nestling 'neath those purple shadows,
St. Lawrence has always had that special something that sets it apart from from the rest. Happy 150th Birthday, SLU. I know that you will continue to provide future generations with unique experiences, unforgettable friendships, and a solid foundation for successful and happy lives.

Samantha Nichols Markey McGoldrick '97
Happy Birthday St. Lawrence!
A bit of History: Two of my three cousins (Ellen Markey Linza: 1988 and Sean Liam Markey: 1990), my sister (Sarah Humiston Markey Bushweller: 1994) and I attended St. Lawrence University. Ellen and Sean received North Country scholarships, my sister had her heart set on SLU so she applied early admission, and I received a scholarship for strength of character (if not all A's). Thank you very much to a most generous couple for which the scholarship is named!

My sister and her husband, Scott Bushweller (1992) met at Larry-land. In 46 days, I shall wed a SLU alum, Aaron Jess McGoldrick (1996). In case you were wondering exactly what a Larry is - it was the self-given nickname for all students / alums / professors / staff at St. Lawrence. Now society has swung a bit in the conservative direction and it is no longer politically correct to use this name. Not entirely sure why this is, but also being the age of marketing, branding is very important. Clearly someone decided that "The Saints" conveys a more favorable image - especially as SLU moved further and further away from its liberal roots of the 60's - 80's. But I digress...

Aaron was the first person I met as a freshman. Arriving early for a Pre-Trip (canoeing trip), my sister pointed me towards Lee Hall, at the time housing Residence Life. The person who gave me the combination to my door was none other than the man to whom I shall shortly be wed.

As a student at SLU, there are various milestones I fondly remember:

1. Joining the Women's swim team
2. Acting in plays
3. Singing with Laurentian Singers and traveling to Italy during spring break for a concert tour
4. Meeting amazing professors like Dr. Tom Greene, Dr. Andrea Nouryeh, Dr. Frank Whalen, Dr. Natalia Singer, Dr. Grant (who headed up the London Program 1996/1997), Dr. Ron Ortiz, Dr. Henry Crimmel, Dr. Stanley Romenstein to name the most cherished
5. Living in London, England for a semester-abroad (Ellen went to Kenya and Austria, my sister tried to go to Kenya but there was too much liability because she has Diabetes {pancreas doesn't produce insulin} which hopefully now has a cure).
6. Joining Chi Omega Sorority so I could hang out w/ my (blood) sister the one year we were both at St. Lawrence
7. Watching hockey games
8. Hanging on the quad (which is now taken up by buildings)
9. Trying to break into the tunnels
10. Relaxing at Camp Canaras for student group retreats
11. Staying at Catamount lodge for orientations and club outings

Now as alums, we are fortunate enough to attend Alumni Week 8 at Camp Canaras (upper Saranac Lake) with my cousin Ellen. It is a magical place where the outside world disappeared (until they built a cell phone tower in Lake Placid and then our Blackberries (PDA) and phones received signal). We make new friends each year - people from all graduating classes, unified by our common experience and love for St. Lawrence.

I hope life finds you well, dear reader, with the ability to exercise independent thought, to question experiences and to seek out explanations and deeper meanings.

As far as dreams - for my descendents (chips and twigs), you must compare with family lore... I floundered around after college from career to career until I figured out that business is a necessary evil but my place was in the classrooms of inner cities. My dream to fight against a system that ignores those most in need - the economically depressed - I hope to see to fruition. My dream to market my parents' artwork not only because they are talented, but because the world might be moved by their paintbrush and pen (especially b/c computer graphics are all the rage: any one can do them but find someone with an eye for composition is another matter entirely). My dream to travel to Senegal with my (soon-to-be) husband, back to the village that welcomed him in his Peace Corps stint. My dream to write children's books - to break language, ethnic and cultural barriers and to teach a little common sense (adults are often sorely lacking this important quality - hence the age of!
litigation and "wars for oil". Ahh, now I must rest, as tomorrow brings another day (and 3 wedding dress samples should arrive in the mail tomorrow)!

....we'll ne'er forget the Scarlet and the Brown.

Greg Chase '98 (Alumni Executive Council)
Best wishes to all who made these years great ones.

Martha Jones (Powers) '76, Parent of 02, 04

Happy Birthday to SLU! I have wonderful memories of SLU that I cherish, especially the volunteer work I was able to do with needy children. I ended up becoming a teacher then a school principal. Both my sons followed suit and went to SLU, Matt Class of 2002 and Jeremy Class of 2004. I think their best memories were with the intramural Rugby Club! We're glad the university is still so strong and offers so much to its students!

Ashley C. Ross '08
Happy Birthday St. Lawrence!! May there be many, many more to come.

Kelly D. Johnston '00
Happy Birthday SLU! Forrest and Bubba live on. I had the best years of my life at SLU and will always hold you dear in my heart.

The time I spent at SLU was a great and valuable experience, which gave me a great and everlasting faith in America ! Hail to Old SLU today with hearty congratulations and best wishes for the future!

Alexandra Kirby Taylor '89 (Alumni Council VP)
HAPPY BIRTHDAY- SLU! You have given me so much beyond just the great education I received in the 4 years on Campus. The friends I have and will always cherish and the great opportunities to give back after graduation. In the last 6+ plus years on the Alumni Council, I have learned so much more about the University. The dedication of the faculty and staff to make it the best place for students to learn, grow and be great global citizens. Also, many, many dedicated Alumni who give time and money to make sure the SLU tradition lives on. We are all Laurentains for Life and are so lucky to have been a part of a rich 150 year SLU history. A toast to you all !!!

Kathleen Douglass Dailey '71
Happy Birthday, SLU. I have wonderful memories of the campus - especially of hiking to the top of the Chapel to play the 'chapel bells' each night - to end the day and head for dinner. The Alma Mater was played every evening. Both of my parents attended SLU and I have hopes that my son will consider the school when he reaches college age! It was a great place to grow
!

Macrina Martin '69
Dean Eaton, snow on the quad, Appleton Arena, History classes in a quonset hut-Thanks for the memories! Dr. Rossie, Dr. Wells, Dr. Lammers, Dr. Culpepper, and Dr. Angus-Thanks for the strong foundation that has stood me in such good stead. I liked SLU so much that I never left the college campus for too long. After serving in Student Affairs and teaching Psychology at Syracuse University, Penn State, and Mount Olive College, I am now the Disability Counselor at Lenoir Community College in Kinston, NC.

As Dylan would say "If you're travelin' to the North Country fair,Where the wind hits heavy on the borderline, Remember me to one who lives there, For she was once a true love of mine." Bless you SLU on this 150th and may there be many more!

Meg Bernier '07(Alumni Executive Council)

I wish the very best to all Laurentians today 150 years after St. Lawrence was chartered. I owe so much to the University and I'm very proud to be a Laurentian, especially today. All the best .

Karen Kellogg Spooner '65
For about 77 years, SLU has been a part of my family, with my parents and two uncles attending before me and before my daughter. Three generations. I never believed a school could mean so much to a family. The warmth that one feels there. The friendships made are everlasting. Moreover, it provides the best education available. And so I send greetings on behalf of all my SLU family members: Margery Howe Kellogg, John W. Kellogg, Earl P. Savage, Norman P. Kellogg and my daughter Alison L. Spooner '05. Thank you to all who have made SLU what it was yesterday, is today and will be tomorrow.

Gregg Ferguson (1981) and Martha Ferguson (1949)
Happy 150th Birthday SLU!! The "candle in the wilderness" has been a "bright shining light" in both of our lives. Best wishes for 150 more wonderful years of helping to shape the future of the world's youth.

As the years pass, unused formulas and facts fade in the dark recesses of ones mind. Still glowing in the heart are the memories of friends and values formulated during those precious 4 years. The legacy of this light will glow for generations. May the new guardians of this light honor the solemn responsibility and never let this light fade. Happy Birthday

Anita Hamada McCollester '52
Happiest of Birthdays to my dear Alma Mater! When I arrived in Canton from NYC via the railroad all by myself in 1948, there was nobody to greet me. I did not know which direction to take to the campus. Inadvertantly, I headed toward downtown. A local resident, quite amused by my disorientation, indcated the correct direction. It was a lonely walk to the Hill. Eventually, I found my way. At first everyone thought that I was an heiress from Hawaii. WWII was not to far behind me in history. Needless to say I enjoyed the attention for being a Japanese-American in those days was not very pleasant (today, the situation is not as edgy - I am considered an Eurasian-American). In due time, truth prevailed I was not from Hawaii but a bewildered freshman from Long Island. After clearing much misinformation, I was duly registered and ensconced in Dean-Eaton Hall. Henceforward, I have become and remain a devoted "Larry." My dear Alma Mater has opened many doors for me during my lifetime. I shall eternally cherish the sound education, the sincere and continuing friendships, the Pi Beta Phi affiliation (twice alumnae president),the extra-curricula activities while at SLU - everything which had prepared me for my future career in teaching, in community commitment and in family life. Thank you, thank you, thank you dear St. Lawrence University. Wish I could celebrate this day with fellow alumni and students! God Bless America, St. Lawrence University and All affiliated with this great institution!!!

St. Lawrence has always been a part of my life.I grew up going to hockey each winter, I am the third generation in my family to attend as well as having children who have attended or are presently attending SLU. I have been fortunate to have worked at SLU on three different occasions and I currently have a spouse employed at SLU. I have a passion for St. Lawrence and its students, faculty, and staff. Perhaps its genetic and perhaps its familiarity, but each time I come on campus I feel like I am "coming home". Happy Birthday and continued success and growth for future generations.

St.Lawrence has taken my son who had always been quietly confident and made him a thinker who now expresses his options freely. St. Lawrence has make him a well rounded thinking individual who now knows what he wants out of life but more importantly knows what he must give back to the world he lives in. Thank you St. Lawrence for being that candle in the wilderness and for lighting the path he will inevitably follow the rest of his life. St. Lawrence as a good for us and will always hold a special place in our hearts.

Catherine Schulte-Hamilton '82

Happy Birthday St. Lawrence! In 2006, SLU is in the midst of building the new Science Building and finished renovating the Arts Building. Canton, NY, remains a cute little town, with small shops and few major businesses. Hopefully, even though time will have passed, Canton will remain the same, and St. Lawrence students will be enjoying the beautiful campus as it becomes Spring.

Kendra Horton '07
Happy 150th SLU!!! Thanks for all the memories!

Happy Birthday SLU...thanks for the good times and great memories!!

Marianne Richardson Savino '69
My family were Larries almost from the beginning: my great grandmother was one of the early Browning Society founders - later Kappa Kappa Gamma:Estelle Brees, class of 1878. Her son, Elbridge O. Hurlbut, was a scholar athlete - 4-letter-man and honor grades in chemistry and an ATO brother all his life, and he was a graduate in the 1904 class; his best friend and brother-in-law, Bert Alexander, and he were part of a team of basketball stars that were still being recognized when I was a freshman. My mom, Adelaide Hurlbut Richardson Steele, took me to class sometimes when she was earning her Master's in Counseling Ed back in 1954, and she was a loyal alumna all her life till her death in 2002. My stepbrother, Robert Steele, was nearly a graduate in the early 1950's in the theological school, and his son, David, is a coach and teacher in the Heuvelton Central School. Like my mom, David earned his counseling master's. I graduated in 1969, and my husband, Paul, was a graduate in 1968. He then taught chemistry for a year part-time at SLU while he was a full-time faculty member at Canton College. We loved SLU all the time we were there and will always. It is what made us seek careers teaching and working in public universities and colleges: other people who may never understand the support we received as students get the best that SLU gave us when we were undergrads. Paul has won the SUNY Chancellor's Medal for Teaching at Erie Community College and also at the University at Buffalo, and I won the Buffalo State College President's Medal for Service to the College. One of my good BSC faculty friends, Deborah Renzi, class of 1970, and I usually break into a rendition of the Alma Mater at our faculty parties - it is a signal to our spouses to drive us home: the wine was very good that day! We will toast you with a fine glass on April 3, 2006, and be proud to wear the Scarlet and the Brown.

Jeffrey P. Hemmings '63
Happy 150th. My Dad, class of '37 had the honor of attending your 100th. My daughter, Emery, class of '99 and I wish you well during your next 150!!!

Elizabeth Tilt Weiner '92
Best wishes for coninued excellence and pride, St Lawrence! There is no stronger connection than between two Larrys. Thank you SLU for the great friends and great times...continue on!

Michael Richman '68
Best wishes for the next 150th. Sunny skies for the future!

Ruth Kreuzer,
emeritus faculty

After 35 years of teaching Russian culture and literature courses (in translation) and Russian language courses, I retired in 2004. The teaching of Russian at SLU was retired with me. We Americans are trendy, even in our educational interests; unfortunately, Russia is not a "hot" subject right now. I wonder what the world will be like in 2056? Will St. Lawrence have the foresight to look beyond the current trends, and prepare our students for the wider world they will inherit? Will we Americans ever learn to communicate with others across national boundaries on equal terms? Will St. Lawrence increase its promotion of international education in a meaningful way? To you future St. Lawrence students and teachers: look outward at the world with open eyes, experience and reason; look inward to find the love, understanding and compassion to spend the rest of your lives trying to make the world a better place to live for all.

Happy Birthday St. Lawrence! May you continue to enter the hearts of those who come through your doors and, for years to come, bolster their resolve to make a positive difference in the world!

Sarah Richter Cox '83

Here's a big birthday wish your way St. Lawrence University. You have been so good to so many people. Keep up the great work!

Mary Perry Yester '73
Happy Birthday St. Lawrence! From a "candle in the wilderness" to a beacon in our global society. May your light shine strong and true.

Jane Raymond Ciarcia '51
"St. Lawrence Mother Dear,"
When I couldn't afford a college education, you afforded me one with your generosity in scholarships and campus jobs. The result has been a lifetime of learning, searching, finding beauty in the arts, valuing friendships made, and enjoying the opportunities to prove my loyalty and gratitude through my support of campaigns and reunions. Being a Class Reporter since graduation (that's 55 years come June 2006)has kept me in touch with Alumni and University staff, and I rejoice that I am a "team" with my daughter, Joy, a Class Reporter since her graduation of 1986.
Happy Birthday, "Mother Dear," and may you have many more of them, showing each year your advancements in learning for the benefit of your "children."

Tom Wilder '00
My time at SLU has provided me with one of the best stories I can tell to any alum. Sitting at a stop light in Baltimore, I saw a young man in the car next to me make a gesture that I should roll down my window. I did and he said to me "Hey, I saw the St. Lawrence sticker in your window. Did you go there?" I said that I did and he explained that he had been accepted and wasn't sure if he should go. Without pause I told him, "those were the best four years of my life."
Thanks for the dear friends and treasured memories. Here's to many more great years!

George and Linda DeHaas, parents '06
Best Wishes to St. Lawrence on the 150th.....We had a great four years of parenting a "Saint" student and lacrosse player!

Happy Birthday to the scarlet and the brown. We have warmed ourselves by the candle that you lit.

Bill "Patch" Paczkowski '93
The more things change, the more they stay the same ... Time goes by so fast, but the memories, friendships, and experiences that St. Lawrence University helps us enjoy are just as strong today as they were 150 years ago, and I'm sure they will be just as strong looking back 200 years, and BEYOND! Happy Birthday St. Lawrence, and many more!

Carol Ann Kissam, staff
I wish a very happy birthday to St. Lawrence University. I'm sure the founders who imagined and created this institution of higher education in the North Country had no idea how fine it would become. I'm sure if they were to return today, they would be very proud of what St. Lawrence University has become. Just take a walk around this beautiful campus; just talk with students, faculty, administrators and staff; just hear the pride coming from the mouths of alumni; just experience the aura of campus life, and you will agree. What better tribute than from those who know and have come to appreciate!

Anne Joslin Slater '74
Some of the best times of my life, KDS, Snow Bowl and hanging out with friends at the library and over long dinners in Sykes Dining Hall fill my memories of SLU. Later, as a parent, Parents Weekend, dancing at the Tick Tock, dining at the Glass Onion and partying with my daughter Beth and her Delta friends are also fond memories! My current job (children's librarian)and volunteer activities (ski instructor for the disabled) are directly related to my education at SLU. Happy Birthday and thanks for the memories!

Wendy Zolto Smith '73
Life-shaping lessons and events, life-long memories and friends, life-tested character - this University gave me this and more. My wishes to the generations ahead that they benefit in the same way. Thank you and Happy Birthday St. Lawrence!

Daniel O'Connor, Faculty, 1959-1990
It was 47 years ago this month that I first came to Canton on the "Canton Creeper", 47 years since I first had that warm feeling of being in the right place at the right time, St. Lawrence, you welcomed me, made me feel needed, wanted and at home. I had the privilege of teaching your students for thirty years, hoping to instill in them a love for my field and a respect and love for you. May your first 150 years be but the beginning of your place within, and service to, the North Country and beyond. And may all who come to you seeking knowledge and understanding of the vast legacy of the past and a fuller insight into mysteries confronting them in the present, find it all within your classrooms, your sport fields and your dormitories.Happy Birthday St. Lawrence! Daniel Wm.O'Connor

Catherine Ball Church '73
Despite the passage of many years, St. Lawrence is still such a part of me. I knew the minute I visited, as a timid high schooler, that it was a one-of-a-kind place, and the place for me. Now, as a resident of Michigan, I soak up every bit of SLU news and check the website often. It was such a kick to have our middle daughter choose St. Lawrence too. Happy Birthday, St. Lawrence! I hope maybe a grandchild or two might come your way one day.....

Frank S. Beckerer, Jr '65

Prior to the civil war of this age of email messages, St. Lawrence taught the value of saying "hello" with a smile. May that lesson continue.

Brendan Brew '01 & Jacquelyn Troy Brew '03

We will forever cherish the memories we have of St. Lawrence! Happy Birthday and best wishes for another successful 150 years!

Aimee Leigh Landry '00
I thought my four years at SLU were going to be the best years of my life; I was wrong. St. Lawrence provided me with an education (both inside and outside the classroom) that has enabled me to grow and prosper in the years since graduation - thanks for providing me with such a wonderful stepping stone for Life! I am anxiously awaiting the day when my niece and nephew are old enough for college - I'll definitely steer them to SLU!

MaLora McCullough '91
I couldn't let this opportunity pass without saying "Happy Birthday" to what has undeniably been one of the greatest things to ever happen to me --- St. Lawrence! St. Lawrence is like a parent that you don't always tell you love but to whom you are forever indebted. My time at St. Lawrence confirmed what I always knew in my heart of hearts to be true, that the world was much bigger than inner city Buffalo. And I was meant to be a part of it. The support I received and the knowledge I gained while attending SLU have helped me to not only survive in the Big Apple but to thrive. Thanks SLU! May you be blessed with another 150 years!

Doug Hartford '65

St. Lawrence is a very special place. No matter how long it has been or how far away I get, the years I spent there provided for some of my most cherished memories. Take care of the Scarlet & Brown - someday you will feel the same.

Sandy Mayer '66
St. Lawrence was a "young" 106 years old when I started there...a different time with many happy memories. SLU was for me "the road taken"...It gave me the self confidence I lacked and a chance to come out of my shell and enter a successful adulthood. It also gave me the opportunity to meet the young woman who's been my wife for 39 years! For all this and more, THANK YOU St. Lawrence and a very Happy Birthday and many more.

Alicia Joy '96
HAPPY BIRTHDAY ST. LAWRENCE!

Sandra Ciccone Wagner '74

Willoughby F. Richardson '62
Wow, 150 years and I was only "on location " for four of them. Little did I know just how important those years would be many years into the future. The older one gets, the more one appreciates the past and what it means. Thank you SLU, Happy Birthday and many more to come as you welcome more students through your doors and give them the opportunities to become better human beings for their experience at St Lawrence.
