University Communications
University Writer

Primary Function:

The University writer is a key member of and contributes significantly to the mission of the St. Lawrence University communications team. Reporting to the director of editorial services, the writer produces copy under deadline in multiple styles and formats for a range of communications, including print and online materials that support St. Lawrence’s communications and marketing goals.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • The writer produces written copy as assigned for the quarterly magazine, St. Lawrence; for the University’s website and social media; for St. Lawrence admissions and advancement; for miscellaneous projects ranging across the scope of the University; and, as needed, for the media relations component of the University communications office.
  • The writer assists the director of editorial services in numerous capacities, including editing and supporting production of the University magazine and other publications; maintenance of and monitoring adherence to the University’s style guide; and editing and/or proofreading other, miscellaneous pieces of writing that may originate anywhere on campus, for example, Board of Trustees resolutions, Commencement materials and art gallery promotions.
  • The writer takes part in University communications planning for publications such as the magazine and admissions and advancement materials, and, often in concert with the director of publications and/or others as appropriate, meets with individuals seeking publications to assist with developing concepts for copy.
  • The writer assists the director of editorial services in managing student interns as opportunities present themselves.
  • The writer performs other duties in support of University communications as assigned.

Skills/Qualifications:

  • An undergraduate degree in the liberal arts or a field related to writing or communication, and at least one to three years of experience in writing for various platforms, both print and electronic.
  • Excellent writing, grammar and editing skills, including experience with and knowledge of feature writing, writing for marketing purposes and writing for the Web and social media.
  • Proven skills in creativity, analysis and problem-solving and the ability to evaluate, synthesize and incorporate ideas and feedback from multiple stakeholders; ability to synthesize complex ideas and concepts into compelling writing.
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team; ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Knowledge of social media and emerging communications.
  • Familiarity with a college/university or nonprofit setting a plus.
